Bradbury uses verbal irony to convey the theme of rules and order as a form of control. The use of this irony is when Montag asks Mildred “When did we meet. And where?” then Mildred says that she doesn’t know and it doesn’t matter. Montag says he agrees with her but he really doesn’t, which is verbal irony because he is saying something that is not true and he knows is not true. He wants to know how the government has set things up and is questioning authority. This is showing the rules and order as a form of control by the government obviously setting people up to get married that clearly don’t love each other.
