“Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings” is a quote by Salvador Dali expressing the importance of ambition. Ambition is the greatest trait shown by the human race, driving innovation and creativity, which helps to change the world. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley shows the ambition of scientist Victor Frankenstein, who unknowingly, tested the boundaries of science and created something that would inevitably bring his demise. Without the creation of the monster, there would be no way of telling whether or not it was the correct course of action to do so. Previous scientists had never attempted an experiment quite like his, nor did they believe it was possible. That did not stop him and he continued to try, devoting his life to what he thought mattered. Had people seen the work he was doing, they would not approve because they would not understand. Victor did not let others decide his boundaries and he would therefore discover where the boundaries of science and his work stood himself. Victor’s monster caused havoc within the world, while trying to find its place and figuring out its existence. The disaster that was the creation of the first monster, was proof that it should not have been done in the first place. This helped Victor decide that making a second monster would not be a good idea. Though the monster tried desperately to convince Victor to create him a partner, he would not due to the risk of the same situation happening once more, or even worse. Victor thought of his past and realized the mistake he was making, “Three years before I was engaged in the same manner, and had created a fiend whose unparalleled barbarity had desolated my heart, and filled it it for ever with the bitterest remorse” (141). Had he not realized this, by simply assessing the situation, the second monster would have been created. Without remembering his past and realizing where the boundaries stood by his own experiences, another grave mistake could have been made.
