Despite Victor being punished for creating a hideous creature, justice is served without being fair, nor just. In the story, relatives of Victor die despite being innocent or having done any wrongdoing, such as William, Elizabeth, Henry, or even, his own father. Victor no doubt did wrong, he played god with nature and created life, but rather than cherishing it, he abandoned it. In retrospect, Victor could’ve done better and is seen as evil, however, acting on his human nature, he isn’t in fact evil, but rather clumsy or human. Seen in the book, his suffering took place while creating the creature, and after its creation. It is shown more clearly when Victor states, “I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body. For this I have deprived myself of rest and health.” (Shelley, 2003) Analizing this quote it is revealed that Victor feels regretful after enduring this long torment of the creation of this creature which not only does he despise at the moment it came to life, but would end up inevitably ending with its own creator. Following its creation, the creature was neglected by many to come, given its appearance, which would result in it murdering William Frankenstein, Victor’s brother. Further into the story, the creature ends up directly or indirectly killing many relatives of Victor, those including Henry Clerval, Elizabeth Lavenza (his wife), Alphonse Frankenstein (his father), and Justine Moritz. These deaths cause Victor to fall far from reality, losing his sanity and securing his hate for the creature, making him suffer even more than he already has, given his already unstable mental health following the creation of the creature. At the very end of the story, he ends up dying from hypothermia or excessively cold temperatures whilst the creature watches, the creature has served justice, hurting those in front of his
