In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley uses Victor’s selfishness and ambition for knowledge to questioned how far society has to go to satisfy our yearn to be God. Vicor’s God complexion shows the dangers of wanting to challenge the limits of human knowledge without thinking of the consequences. When Victor attends university and the material he has learned is belittled by a professor as a waste of time, Victor is determined to prove him wrong. As Victor becomes more interested in the sciences and in the creation of life he sees that as the only way to make advancements that others have not yet done. He succeeded in bringing the dead back to life but not in the form he had in mind.

Literature is a form of escape from the world we live in. Whether it’s for school, or some form of entertainment, more often than not, books let the reader escape from the challenges of now. Even if a novel focuses on a lone person that takes place in a day, the reader forms a sense of compassion and companionship with either the author, or the novel itself. Yet the book of Frankenstein creates a web of intermixing relationships that are eternally altered all because of man’s natural desire to learn more. But how do these broken relations between Victor and his loved ones stem from himself?

Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” is a piece of literature that explores the pent-up resentment in a maternal-like relationship between a shamefaced creator, Victor Frankenstein and his neglected creation, the “monster”. The central plot and main characters revolve around the taboo theme of desertion and shame. Characteristic behaviors and emotions found in the story reflect back to Mary’s own inner dark struggles and memorable moments, in the sense that they are coordinated in a haunting family-like dynamic. Emotional and physical isolation in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein are the most pertinent and prevailing themes throughout the novel. These themes are so important because everything the monster, Victor, and Robert Walton do or feel directly relates to their poignant seclusion. The effects of this terrible burden have progressively damaging results upon the three.

Monster I saw her again only three days after I’d killed her. Her funeral was the next month; her family had needed the extra time to prepare her things for the burial and inheritance. She’d had a nice vault somewhere, but half of the money went into her siblings’ schooling funds. That was something that everybody had approved of, despite them all not getting a single cent of the fortune that I received half of. Everybody around me had mourned the loss of the innocent, hardworking girl that had been so good and promising.
After telling Victor the story of his short, miserable life, the creature’s longing to be a part of a family continues as he begs Victor to give him a female creature, similar to himself, that he can run away and avoid humanity with forever. The creature explains to Victor “You must create a female for me with whom I can live in the interchange of those sympathies necessary for my being” (Shelley 156). The absence of family throughout Frankenstein causes psychological as well as physical illness in several characters.
Victor’s first look at his “masterpiece” horrifies him and he proceeds to run away; leaving his “child” all alone. The paths both Victor and the monster will lead will be obvious as the story progresses. Through indirect characterizations, it is obvious that, both characters undergo changes as the story furthers.
