Genie’s socialization lacked due to her being isolated until she was 12 years of age. She grew up with virtually no human contact. She was kept tied to a potty chair with little to no visual or vocal stimulation of. As we read in this week’s assignment socialization makes up a large part of who we are. We learn from many different people and situations, and Genie was restricted from these things during her formative years. She had no mental development through stimulation. Genie was not able to go through life courses, for example, she did not go through stages such as progressing from a toddler to kindergartener. Genie essentially was stuck at infant for most of her young life. She did not have that social interaction that is required to develop. She was not exposed to socialization and was unaware of how to behave in society or certain social settings. When she was found, she constantly spat, sniffed, crawled and barely spoke or made noises. One thing in the video that sticks out is when it stated that they wanted to test out an idea important to science and society. That was clearly a statement about a research subject not of a patient. They were not rehabilitating her; they were studying her. They ran tests on her brain waves, and at least one researcher concluded that she was brain damage.
