As technology continues to grow and grow, things like video games are becoming a larger part of everyday life. Inventions like mobile apps, game consoles, and online games are becoming more frequent than ever and some people are concerned. Neurologists and psychologists alike have come to the same conclusion that video games are “addictive”. Others, however, believe that the large usage of video games is completely normal and in some ways it can even be beneficial. As games have become more and more popular, some people have started to believe that they alter the gamer. Some believed that the physical, social, and mental aspects of gamers are slowly deteriorated when they play games for an extended amount of time. Christopher J. Ferguson and Patrick Markey who are writers for the New York Times, disagree with this accusation. They conducted studies and tests and were able to conclude that “...almost none of those classified as being possibly addicted to video games experienced negative outcomes from this addiction. That is, the mental, physical and social health… was not different from that of individuals who were not addicted to video games...”. These results show that there is no difference between those who play video games and those who do not in reference to their physical, social, and mental states. However, it is clear that video games help foster positive social networks and do not affect the overall behaviour of gamers. Social interaction in games is highly encouraged by developers and helps create new bonds and friendships between people. The different states of gamers are also not affected when they play games and they remain exactly the same in reference to physical, mental, and social qualities.
