When I analyze this painting, my eyes are drawn to the building in the bottom left which seems to resemble a church. It has a white steeple and roof line along with light red brick for the walls. The color, style, size, and position of this particular building sets it apart from the rest of the buildings which all seem to blend together along the composition. The building’s edge meets right with the fence line along the field in the bottom left corner of the piece. It prompts viewers to begin their focus on the left of the painting instead of drawing our eyes directly to the center.
The subject of the painting is a depiction of a mountain landscape. Near the bottom of the picture plane in the foreground there’s a canal through the mountain side. If you look closely you can see someone in the water climbing up the rock. The overall theme of the piece seems to be very peaceful and exciting. Hassam uses a few visual elements of form to support his painting.
The light change in the artwork from dark to light, displays a feeling from relaxation to adventurous and excitement. The male figure I the piece has a calm mood to him and wears a straw hat while reading a newspaper that demonstrates a sense of modernism. The left side of the painting depicts a magnificent view of the cultivated land that falls beneath the dark, uncultured forest, creating the sense of movement from danger to peace. The darker values and unwelcoming atmosphere that surrounds forest enhances this sense of danger (Zygmont). The dark, grey storm clouds and rain falling on the trees create a shadow on the leaves, due to the absence of light they receive. However, as the painting progresses from the left to right, the intensity of light increases. It is implied that the light source comes from the top right corner, creating cast shadows below the mountains and providing light to the lands full of crops.
This acrylic painting was completed by Lawrence Smith, and is representational. Smith uses lines and color to divide the areas and to give each element its figure. He uses mostly cool colors (green and blue) which gives the painting a sort of calming effect. Smith uses proportion to show that the light house is further away by making the rocks larger and the trees smaller. He used shapes like triangles for the tree branches.
Personally, I feel very connected to the painting because of my experiences of living on the Texas Coast. A majority of my fondest memories have been on the beach and surrounded by water. “Clouds over Laguna” is a very familiar sight to me and feels like home. The dust across the mid ground of the painting contrasts against the blue and green hues of the top third of the painting. The detail of the drover on his horse in the foreground of the painting shows how Roberts can have intricate details whilst maintaining a soft and smooth stroke line. This interprets the theme of ‘The Bush’ by comparing it to Australia’s inner core landscape. The green from the trees is perched above and away from the earthy tones below. The perfectly blue sky shows a hope in the distance indicating the help the drover needs in this story.
