In Don DeLillo’s novel Libra,the author portrays a character who expresses a simplistic emotion, has trouble relating with others, and has suffered a harsh childhood through violence which causes him to act abrupt. By illustrating these qualities through tone, diction and imagery the reader is able to understand that the character is an emotionless maniac. The protagonist was portrayed with an emotionless tone to reflect his social traumas toward others. The way he expresses a very sexual description of the Jewish girls lingered near the benches makes it odd that he is not like most boys but rather ignores their presence. He instead advances without any hesitation but with a smile on his face giving a feeling that his actions have nothing to do with his surroundings. Another example in this passage is how the author is expressed towards the woman who is beside him on the bus, Marguerite. The second paragraph is significant because a child is under the supervision of a drunk woman but the situation is then revealed when the woman he speaks of is his own mother.
