The novel Animal farm was published in 1945 by George Orwell. The novel is an allegoric story reflecting on the key events leading up to the Russian revolution in 1917. The novel reflects on the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union, Animal farm bases this on the quarrel between the pigs’ and their urge for power. The novel Animal Farm tells of the demise of Manor Farm. The animals of Animal Farm are tired and overworked by Mr. Jones, the owner of the farm. The respected pig, Old Major, calls for a meeting in the barn. At the time of Old Major’s death and the animal’s rebellion. It was supposed to be that all the animals will participate in working as equals, just how Old Major wanted it to be. Nevertheless, the pigs thought themselves to be smarter than all of the other animals, they used this to their advantage to avoid working. In chapter 6 the Pigs and their leader Napoleon betray the trust of the animals by changing the 7 commandments to suit their selfish needs: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” (chapter 10) This quote is the last commandment used after all the others have been abandoned and changed. The betrayal of trust by the pigs’ controlled the animals and harmed them by suppressing their contribution to the animalistic society. The words of the pigs’ lead to the cease of animal farm and any free control of themselves the animals had, Napoleon and the pigs manipulated and lied for their own causes. The greed of the pigs’ tarnished the lives of the innocent animals who were trying to be free of Mr. Jones cruelty. Stealing apples and milk for the pigs; greater good, and sending Boxer to the slaughterhouse are just a few of many lies told by the pigs in order to justify their actions, lead the pigs’ to control the animals of animal farm. The betrayal of the pigs’ lead everything that Old Major did not believe in, the commandments were changed, lies were told and animals died due to being subjected and controlled by the words of Napoleon and the pigs’. The animals of Animal Farm are manipulated and controlled by the power of words. The pigs’ use their intelligence to overpower and lie to the intellectually inferior animals.
