The new ideas of humanism, neoplatonism, and realism were expressed through different works of art during the Renaissance. Humanism was expressed in Leonardo DaVinci’s “Vitruvian Man” and Michelangelo’s painting on the Sistine Chapel, neoplatonism was expressed through Michelangelo’s “David” and “The Creation of Adam”, and realism is expressed through DaVinci’s “Mona Lisa” and Raphael’s numerous madonnas. Through different aspects of each work, the expression of these ideas portrayed an evolution from traditional methods of thought during the Middle Ages. Humanism, the belief in the abundance of human potential, was displayed in Leonardo DaVinci’s “Vitruvian Man”. In this work, DaVinci uses geometry to project his humanistic perspective of the perfect proportions for a human body. Humanism is also displayed in Michelangelo’s painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The painting portrays Michelangelo’s appreciation of the human form. The way David is sculpted shows Michelangelo’s perspective of an ideal, god-like human body. Neoplatonism is also displayed through Michelangelo’s painting of “The Creation of Adam”, where Adam is portrayed to be created directly from the hand of God. This painting also displays Adam in the image of God, implying that Adam’s form is god-like.
