Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is a biography that tells the tale of young Louis Zamperini, who became a prisoner of war during World War 2 and survived to tell his tale. As a prisoner of war, Louis was almost forced into doing propaganda for the Japanese, who were holding him captive. Propaganda is defined as the “information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etcetera (Dictionary.com).” Propaganda played a crucial role during World War 2, with many countries using them to display many different messages, sometimes using influential figures similar to Louis. Widely spread throughout the war, propaganda was used in many different ways and for many different reasons.
In the early 1900’s European countries began competing and with that they were also building strong army’s and navy’s. After a while, the United States got involved and were in need of the people’s support. It took convincing but once people got on board with the idea of going to war, war fever in the United States was at an all-time high. The United Nations had not yet been established which meant conflicts were not getting resolved. This was unlike anything the U.S. had done before.
During the years of 1919 to 1928 the fear of communism spreading across America after WW1 was a big issue. Lenin 's belief of no economic classes and no private property was slowly starting to intrigue many. This period of fear was know as the Red Scare. President Palmer took action to prevent communism from spreading in America known as the Palmer Raids. The Palmer Raids were the deportation of any alien who was suspected in being a radical or in other words someone who supported communism.
An example would be “Be Sure You Have Correct Time.” This poster, aimed to persuade the minds of many Americans to adopt anti-foreign policies on many countries who were going to war with us at the same time. Therefore, the propaganda was trying to exploit the foreign countries’ citizens who we were at war with. A second example would be the poster titled, “This is the Enemy.”
World War 1 was the first war were propaganda played huge role in keeping people at the home front informed about what was happening throughout the battlefields. This was also the first war where the government introduced propaganda to target the public and change their opinion on war (“Propaganda in World War 1”). There were many reasons for the governments to use propaganda throughout World War 1 such as; to blacken the enemy's name, to turn countries against another country, to persuade people into enlisting, to make war sound glorious ("Facts - AL WWI Propaganda."), and to calm down or even to stir up emotions throughout the war. One of the main ways propaganda was used in World War 1 was to ensure that the public only knew what the governments wanted them to know.
Propaganda is used by the World State from the novel “Brave New World” and Adolf Hitler, the Nazi Party. Propaganda is a way of persuading the masses for a certain organization or movement. It is a form of mind control and works on the fears and desires of the audience. The three forms of propaganda that the World State and Adolf Hitler, the Nazi Party, use are the following. Bandwagon, convincing the audience to take advantage of the offer before it is too late.

He was, however, able to state the three principal characteristics of socialism, which were the public ownership of the means of production, an end to exploitation, and the dictatorship of the proletariat. This is evident in the televised premature ending of the Montag’s chase and in the symbolism of 451 by the government in Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451. However, in our world propaganda has been used to unite a country through targeted mass persuasion. This is seen in two classic U.S propaganda posters that encourage U.S citizens to join the army: “I want you”(index 1) and “Remember Dec. 7th” (index 2).
