To fly is to be free as one would think will observing birds in midflight. They gracefully fall to earth then at the last second pull up in such a wide arc, it would seem they were soaring to the heavens. In the story Volar by Judith Ortiz Cofer in the story the symbolic meaning of flight is significant in two of the main characters. The Daughter sees flight as her means of protection, as it is often known that people that are fascinated by flight want to be away from conflict, thus using flight as a means of protection or getting away. The Mother sees flight as her escape to a better time, as in the story she talks about returning home to Puerto Rico, yet her husband cannot afford it so she sees flight as her means of turning back the clock to a happier time. Her body changes that into Supergirl a superheroine who can fly and is practically invincible to all forces that challenge her. This type of psyche can stem from insecurities and the feeling of defenselessness, as her body changes into another person she feels more comfortable in this skin as Supergirl is a hero, and isn't afraid of anything like she is. Supergirls ability to fly is what really drives the daughter to be like her, as with the ability to fly comes the choice to leave her family, and the sadness she believes she has caused them; for example, when she wakes up early in the morning she knows that she cannot get out of bed until a certain time, for the reason that she would be disturbing her parents quiet time. This type of behavior of feeling not wanted can damage a child's self esteem making them feel unwanted, and that resulting behavior could cause a fascination with flight. As in the air one is free of judgement, responsibilities, and the worries of the world that the
