Rebecca Solnit writes articles that reflect her interest in environmental issues that threaten our environment. In this case she writes an essay titled “Walking and the Suburbanized Psyche” and she mentions how personal life affects our environment. She talks about what suburbs are and how walking can let you explore areas that public transportation or technological dependent transportation cannot get into. She mentions how suburban areas are dull and they are not unique so every couple of miles, the views you see is repeated. She claims that Americans should not give up on spending a bit of our time walking outside because it gives us the opportunity to think about our problems and expand our imagination. She believes that the less we spend outside the more we become dull and we will be alienated from nature. I agree with Solnit that we should not let the task of walking a few hours a week completely leave from our weekly routines. Being around places that are designed the same and around people who think alike limits us to expand our imagination and creativity. Whenever I feel like I need a break from all the chaos that goes on in my life, I go outside and walk for a couple of minutes. Walking gives me the ability to clear my mind off of problems that I am going through and just like Solnit says, it gives me the opportunity to think. I agree with Solnit that if we continue to let walking to be devalued, we will lose an important cultural activity that helps us keep the relationship of our mind, body and soul. We should not let the suburbanized psyche take over our minds once it comes to walking. I say the best way for us to connect with our soul is to take a walk and if we believe that walking shows a lack of power, it will be difficult for us to find another easy way to connect with
