Poetry Analysis Everyone at some point in their life has found a characteristic that they dislike about themselves and the world around them. Pablo Neruda, a well-known Hispanic poet, realized this and wrote a poem connecting his life to the world around him. In Neruda’s poem “Walking Around” he uses figurative language and imagery to show traits that he dislikes about himself and how his life is affected by the material world . This poem shows how much someone can have hatred towards themselves because of the world. “Walking Around” based on the title sounds like it would have a very simple meaning. When you actually sit down and read it, it becomes obvious that that assumption is not true. On the surface of this poem you would assume that Neruda goes on a walk in his city and tells his audience what he sees and what it reminds him of. The first line will then assure you that the whole concept of walking around will not be the purpose of the poem. The first line says “It so happens I am sick of being a man.” That statement leads the reader in confusion about what this poem will be about. Neruda 's poem has many phrases that sound dark and make his poem sound full of hatred. For example his first line says “It so happens I am sick of being a man.” For him to say he is sick of being mad is a bold statement. Being sick of being a man is basically like saying your sick of being yourself or you hate yourself. This is basically what his hole poem is centered around is the fact that he hates his life. Because it is centered around this the overall tone becomes dark. With that dark feeling the reader comes to know that Neruda is serious about what he is saying. Neruda 's way of structuring of his poem also adds to the sound of his poem. He structured his poem in free verse which has no particular rhyme scheme.Focusing on no rhyme also makes his voice sound more serious and direct.Besides just sound Neruda uses
