For the purpose of enticing emotion and bringing about a desire in readers to continue indulging in the text, the appeal of emotions through succinct language is utilized. In speaking of personal connections, Cullen appeals to readers’ emotions by using specific background stories of characters in order to ferment a personal connection between the two. For example,
In the novel The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck, the reader follows the main character Wang Lung as he lives in the shifting nation of China. The novel begins on Wang Lung’s wedding day as he travels to the great house of the city to marry his new wife- a former slave named O-Lan. Wang Lung never truly loves O-Lan, but respects her for her hard work. Together the two work on the family’s small plot of land. O-Lan successfully births three children, and all is well until the famine strikes.
In the novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Jack face the obstacles of being alone in a world with no rules or leaders. The boys’ behavior on the island is a microcosm of larger society. Golding proves that mankind is inherently evil, civilized only by society’s rules and expectations. Ralph and Jack share few of the same values, interpersonal skills and leadership styles; they serve as foils throughout the novel in an epic battle of good versus evil.
Wang Lung takes both O-lan and the earth for granted at various times within the novel. Having both O-lan and the earth in his life working and providing for the family leads to acquiring more money. The earth bears the crops that O-lan helps tend to and harvest, so they can be sold in the markets for money. With this money, Lung can buy more land for more crops and grow his wealth. When Wang Lung’s wealth reaches a point where there is enough money to spend on luxury items, his greed takes over.
The characters in any story are the main parts of the story that engage the readers with the uniqueness
1. What has your experience been, thus far, reading your books? The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett used his character development, event organization and literary devices to convey his final message; everyone is born with some degree of gluttony, but excessive greediness can lead to misdemeanor. The majority of his characters were motivated by greed.
Hard work on the land is rewarded with wealth and prosperity. This is a belief of Wang Lung, the main character in The Good Earth. The book is set in turn-of-the-century China, in a rural farming town with few amenities of the revolutionized world. It follows his path from the moment he’s married to his death, with all the highs and lows in his life. It takes specific care to highlight the culture in China and how it affects the characters.
The Good Earth, written by Pearl S. Buck, is a novel that amplifies Chinese culture in the 1920’s. Wang-Lung, a small Chinese man, is the main character, who establishes the ideas of marriage, family, and wealth. Living in the agrarian locations of China, Wang-Lung financially matures to a wealthy man through the novel. This dynamic character struggles with lack of money in the earlier parts of the novel, and through dedicated farming and work, he rises to power, both financially and socially. During this transition, Wang-Lung becomes an unrecognizable man.
This book was interesting for me because it allowed me to relate to a character. I love reading novels that not only allow me to feel a connection with a character, but allow me to relate to their personality or
This is shown when the characters in this novel speak out against a concept they know nothing about. Therefore, the literary terms an author uses can make an immense impact to the connections the reader makes to a novel, and help to shape a theme that is found throughout
Furthermore, Wang Lung purchases land for his own benefits due to his love for the Earth. He does this, however, he does this in hopes that it will support his family with food from the crops and money from selling the food. Along with that, he also buys it in hopes for his sons and their family to have a food source from the crops even after he is unable to tend and harvest from it. This relates to people passing down things of sentimental value to their offsprings to keep after they are gone. The part of the statement that would relate to this situation is “as it is lived in any age…”.
My grandparents made a sacrifice for their future generations by leaving this village in hope of a better life. As I stare at the filthy, impoverished houses, I can't help but wonder how some poor, Chinese villagers from nowhere had the audacity, grit, and determination to leave the village where years and years of family history are woven into the rich, Southern Chinese soil. I recall Wang Lung from The Good Earth, who became wealthy, forgetting his humble beginnings and everything he valued as a simple, humble farmer. As quite prominent Chinese-Americans, we remember this story's teachings, and believe remembering our modest beginnings and giving thanks to those who came before is crucial.
NEED LEAD. “She knows that doubleness, in the very act of identification, is of the essence of role taking: There is the taker of the role and there is the role taken. And fiction is, in imaginative enactment, a role taking.” By the reader taking on the role of a character in a work of fiction, the reader feels a sense of accomplishment
A reader must know the correct characterization of someone in order to fully understand the story. Understanding the point of view and characterization is just as important as understanding the plot. The conflict, climax and other aspects are a major part of the plot as a whole. To put it differently, all the components of a story are equal.
