Literary Analysis of “Waxen Wings” Failure is a grueling issue to consider even if it’s a natural way of life. Ha Songnan’s “Waxen Wings” expresses to never give up on your dreams because sometimes it takes failure to discover achievement. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, written by Dai Sijie, is set in 1971 during the China’s Cultural Revolution. The book starts with two boys, unnamed narrator and his friend Luo being sent from their hometown Chengdu to a small village in Phoenix Mountain to be “re-educated”. The book continues with them skillfully living through the harsh village life with their talent of storytelling and their western knowledge gained from books. Throughout the novel Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, Dai Sijie illustrates different types of literature and how it transforms the character’s life, action and their personalities in both good and bad way. This book is one unique novel about two boys and one little girl’s transformation by the magical
“Saboteur”, written by Ha Jin exposes a difficult period in post-revolutionary China and the negative consequences on people’s lives. Mr. Chiu, a scholar who does not view himself as a common citizen, was wrongfully arrested while on honeymoon with his bride. As an egotistical man who thinks he is above everyone else, Mr. Chiu is arrogant and never takes ownership for his actions. This machoism subjects Mr. Chui to maltreatment from the police that ironically transforms the once seemingly innocent Mr. Chiu to a man consumed by vengeance. Ha Jin’s proficient use of ironic tone and conflict told through the omniscient view of his main character reinforces the story’s main theme: life experiences shape our character and have the power to transform us into a person we despise.
The Good Earth In the early 1900s, China could be a setting where one prospers, or a place where one is poor and living on the streets with no food. If people are willing to work diligently enough to have a successful life even under difficult conditions, they can succeed. In The Good Earth, the protagonist, Wang Lung, has to put up with arduous situations. Although Lung has to deal with these situations, he demonstrates his work ethic, which is one of his many virtues.
At the beginning of the novel, Wang-Lung was a destitute farmer who faithfully upheld these traditional beliefs. Additionally, he believed in the concept of honesty and diligence. As a result, he eventually became a prosperous man who owned more land than anyone else in the area. This was truly achieved through arduous, honest work. In The Good Earth hard work and virtue are rewarded, while idleness and vice are not.
Jin Wang thinks these changes are good but it only affects him and his peers around him. Because of the interaction with the American culture Jin Wang Struggles with his identity and in doing this he sacrifices his friendship for near attention. The whole story is based on a young Chinese
In Duong Thu Huong’s Paradise of the Blind, Hang has been placed on a path of self-sacrifice and duty by her family. Her life unfolds in stages- childhood, young adulthood, and her eventual role as an exported worker in Russia. With each of these shifts in her life comes a shift in setting and a shift in her emotional state. Hang’s changing emotional state depicts her “coming of age” and her growth as a character. Setting is important to creation of shift in the novel, and is often described in detail.
Uday Sethi English 10 Monday, October 5, 2015 Comparative Essay A seeking for identity shown through evolution takes place in both “The Chinese Seamstress” and “The Handsomest Drowned man”, seen through the development of characters from narrative stories that help them grow as individuals who live in societies that are isolated and unknown from the rest of the world. The way the narratives impact the characters and society in the two stories help them seek a new identity that could not be discovered without them. The novel “The Chinese Seamstress” is a great way to exemplify development of knowledge and character seen through two major characters, the narrator and the seamstress.
In The Good Earth, Lung’s sons stray from the family’s traditions and customs. This could be perceived as positive or negative. The sons’ being disrespectful to elders would be negative. It could be considered a weakness to not have a deep connection with the earth but, it could also be considered wise not to rely too much on the earth for all of one 's needs. Religion not being practiced could also be contemplated as favorable or unfavorable.
In the novel Spilled Water, Si-yan met many hardships and difficulties. Some of these were minor. Others were major. However, at last she managed to overcome them all with the help of other people who she met in her travels. Here we consider what these difficulties were, how she coped with them, who helped her, and what she learned from her difficult experiences.
All in all, Lung’s sons are very greedy and do not understand the real aspect of their lives and traditions they were born into. As one of the most famous presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt said “Happiness is not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort.” In the novel Wang 's eldest son thought having the possession of money was the most valuable thing in the world and thought the universe revolved around it. Wang and his sons do not have the same values and that is not good for his sons because Wang has good values for his tradition and to make sure the next generation is stable to live like he did. But his sons do not care about anyone but themselves and all they do is what is best
