Brandon King History 1301 HW 2 8 AM What were the causes and results of the War of 1812? The war of 1812 was yet another war that the United States got caught up with. There were several reasons as to what caused this war to begin. Let 's go back to the year of 1806 when France declared it to be illegal for “all neutral trade with Great Britain”
a. The War of 1812 was very big and affected many groups of people. One of the reasons why it began was because of Jefferson’s eager decisions to get rid of the Indians and their responses towards that. “Reports that the British were encouraging Tecumseh’s efforts contributed to the coming of the War of 1812.” (Foner 318) The United States and Britain didn’t get along and there were many conflicts between them some of which were related to the Indians. Jefferson wanted the Indians gone and wanted control of their land.
Majority of the American people don’t know much about The War of 1812. The War of 1812 is often referred as the second war of independence from Britain. The battle of Lundy’s Lane was one of the harshest battles in Canada. (The Battle of Lundy’s Lane) The war of 1812 started from Britain and France attempting to cut off trade to and from America as well impressing their Navy.
Britain was seen as having the upper hand before this War commenced. The British also had more experience of fighting such War compared to the Americans. For example, Britain conflicted with Napoleon and France prior to this War. On June 18th, 1812, James Madison declared war on the British. The Americans initial attack was on the Northwest territory (modern Ontario, Canada) to achieve and gain more land.
The War of 1812 is vaguely remembered by Americans today, very few are aware of who the enemy was or why the war was fought. One reason the war is so vaguely remembered is that no “great” president is connected to the war. The war was fought over maritime issues, the Orders in Council that greatly restricted American trading within the European Continent, and also the practice of the Royal Navy taking over American ships and forcing them to serve on the Navy ships. Although America had won most of its past wars, the War of 1812 was quite different. The nation was lucky to escape, they signed a treaty known as the the Treaty of Ghent which ended the war but did not a thing about the issues that had caused the war in the first place.

Imperial America consisted of the thirst for new markets, the desire for military strength, and the belief in cultural superiority. The United States has had its history of annexation over territories and land, because of imperialism. At the start, the United States purchased Alaska in 1867, and in 1893, annexed Hawaii. The Spanish-American war resulted in the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Throughout the annals of American history, the advocation for freedom, and the absorption of ideals such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness have been at the forefront of the American belief. These beliefs were implemented in 1776 through the Declaration of Independence. This document was ratified by recalcitrant Americans who would not tolerate subjection to tyrannical rule. The American people hoped this document would seal their fate in relation to Europe, and prove to them, and frankly the entire world, that they were a separate, sufficient nation. But as the years unfolded, the realization that America would continue to be considered an inferior nation arose.

In 1807, Thomas Jefferson enforced the Embargo Act. This act made all exports from the U.S. illegal, therefore intending to force Britain and France to respect Americas rights during the Napoleonic Wars. The Embargo Act was intended to destroy the British and French economy, which it did not. In fact the Embargo actually helped British policy and it stopped any help the French may have received from American shipping. Brazil and the Spanish colonies had also just opened to British trade around the same time that the Embargo began, so their economy was unaffected.
The War of 1812 is often a long forgotten war. It has been easy to skip over while learning about the history of our country. People often go from learning about the formation of our country in the Revolutionary War, to the Civil war that almost divided our young nation. No one can deny that these 2 wars are important in the history of the Untied States, but the War of 1812 made America the nation that we are now. Often called our second War of Independence from Britain and our second war with Native Americans, the War of 1812 broke any ties of control that Great Britain had on the newly formed nation, as we trumped the world’s strongest and largest navy.
The War of 1812 was mostly caused by impressment. Impressment was the act in which the British would cpature and enslave American Sailors, forcing them to serve in the British Navy. Another cause of the War of 1812 was Native American attacks in the West. This caused war with Britain because the Native Americans used Bristiah made weapons which showed a possibility of the British supplying them with weapons and encouraging them to attack westward settlers. Warhawks, congressmen from the north and south who advocated war, were also a cause of the War of 1812.
Madison, 1814. The War of 1812, also known as “The Forgotten War," was a war that was fought in 1812 between the British and the United States. This was a war that would truly test the strength of the newly expanded America. The United States of America went to war with Britain for many reasons, including the fact that they were impressing American sailors, supporting the Native Americans, and the people at the time believed that Britain caused the agricultural depression.
The War of 1812; A War that forged a Nation The War of 1812 lasted from 1812-1815, and was fought between the fledgling nation of the United States of America against the British Empire, including its North American colonies, as well as its Native American allies. The war was brought about by many reasons: The British War against Napoleonic France led to a paralysis of American trade, the impressment of U.S. merchant sailors into the Royal Navy which further impeded the American economy, British support of Native American tribes’ opposition towards American westward expansion, as well as outrage over affronts against national honor, notably due to British actions at sea. However, after nearly three years of war, no conclusive winner was determined.
