The Song of Roland tells a tale about warrior chivalry, one of the three prongs of the classification of medieval chivalry. Warrior chivalry is important in medieval society as it demonstrates the importance of feudalism, in which a knight’s main duty is to his lord and fellow Christians. To understand warrior chivalry, it is important to understand feudalism first. Feudalism was a social system in medieval Europe in which there was an exchange of services between a noble lord and vassal, that had an unbreakable bond. These relationships could include homage, labor, military protection and so forth. In a feudal society the three orders: those who pray, those who fight, and those who work are bound together in a mutual obligation determined
