Was Christopher Columbus Chose For Finding The New World?

Many people heard of Christopher Columbus, mainly because we celebrate his holiday the second Monday of October every year, but is he the man we praise for finding the “New World” we believe he is? Many people debate if the national holiday is even appropriate to celebrate. Mostly, because how cruel and harsh he behaved, but many people don't know this side of this story. Students get taught about Columbus foundings and voyages but very rarely on how he treated the Natives or what he did to be able to be known as being the first man to find the Americas. Columbus treated people horribly and should not be rewarded for his horrible behavior.
Columbus was born in 1451 in Italy. He was not wealthy and because of this he did not receive a good education. At the age 14 he played a role on genoese ship. In his twenties he then moved to Portugal and later Spain. At the age 23 he was hired as a sailor. Christopher had a total of 4 voyages to the Caribbeans and South America. Columbus believed these people were easy to manipulate and take control over therefore, that's what he did. Although, he was told to treat these people with kindness he did the complete opposite expecting there to be no cause. He treated them horribly with brutality and severe violence. He even noted in one of his journals that the natives looked like they'd be good servants. Columbus also put natives to work for profits. This is because he was not getting all the profits he needed, so he decided to sell people knowing he had an abundance amount of them. This sparked up what we call today slavery. Years later he sent thousands of Taino people to Spain to be bought. While the Taino people were being exported many died. He not only did all these horrendous actions but he also tortured, terrorized and killed these people.
