Some may claim that he did feel “morally responsible for his actions” (D). Being morally responsible would be like not killing a brother because he is a family member. However, Hamlet did not feel upset at killing his father or his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, so he is not feeling morally responsible for his actions. Therefore, he must be insane. However, in the case of Hamlet, his uncle killed his own father, the one who raised him.
Hamlet is a Shakespearean play about a distraught prince who comes home to Denmark at the news of his father’s death. Once he finds out that his uncle Claudius has married his mother and become king himself, Hamlet suspects foul play. When his father 's ghost comes back to tell him of Claudius’s sins, he is asked to murder Claudius for revenge, but he isn’t sure if he can do it. Some scholars, researchers, and casual readers would argue that this drives Hamlet mad by burdening him with decision. Others would say that after he accepts his father 's plea for vengeance, that he uses this cloak of madness as a disguise so Claudius cannot see his murderous intentions.

Crawford states that Shakespeare includes Hamlet’s fits of madness were deliberately used to make Claudius and his attendants confused and for them to think Hamlet’s mental health is deteriorating. Crawford analyzes, “The fact that he [Hamlet] has made it appear like real madness to many critics today only goes to show the wideness of his knowledge and the greatness of his dramatic skill” (Crawford. 1916. p 1.). Hamlet has been debated by various highly regarded literary scholars over whether he was acting mad or whether he was genuinely mad throughout the play. However, there is one passage that stands out, which can clear him of any accusations that he is indeed insane. Hamlet reveals to his friends his plans to act mad when he says, “How strange or odd some’er I bear myself/(As I perchance hereafter shall think meet/To put an antic disposition on) (1.5.190-192). Once Hamlet said this, it is concluded that Hamlet’s actions and statements towards others in the play— which made him seem insane— were only utilized as a ploy to prevent Claudius and other’s from finding of his recent interaction with the ghost and the information he provided Hamlet regarding his father’s death.
In America today, there are 3.2 million people that are diagnosed with insanity. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the main character of the play is known for having some questionable behaviors and actions, which makes him look insane. Hamlet is insane due to him being able to kill without remorse, him being severely depressed, and being able to speak to a ghost that no one else can hear. The first reason Hamlet can be considered insane is because he is able to take the lives of others and treat others poorly without feeling guilty. I believe that Hamlet's madness is real. There's no way someone could go through what he went through and fake their madness. Although I believe Hamlet’s madness is authentic, I don't believe it took control of him. At the beginning of Hamlet his father King Hamlet was killed. Hamlet is a very clever and motivated individual who creates extravagant plans to achieve success. In the beginning of the play, Hamlet creates a false persona to divert the kingdom’s attention away from his intention to kill Claudius. He tells Horatio that he will “put an antic disposition on,” (I.v.172) to create a sense of madness. This falsehood is created to ensure Hamlet will not be taken seriously and can follow through with his plans without being suspected.
