Some consider Lincoln to be one of the greatest presidents in the United States. Other people consider him one of the worst. People tend to focus on his great achievements in office, but he has had many more mistakes. People know him as the liberator of slaves, but that name can be inaccurate. After researching Lincoln, it is clear that he is not the great president many think he is.
One of the first things to look at is that Lincoln was a racist. People will say no he was not racist because he helped liberate the slaves. But actually, Lincoln did not liberate them for the right reasons. He thought of them as the problem that was causing the Civil War. His initial plan for the slaves was to ship them out of the country. Lincoln did not like them and wanted to just get rid of them. Lincoln even sent a test ship with African Americans to Haiti where majority of them died from disease. African Americans were not the only ones to feel Lincoln’s racist attitude. Native Americans also saw the racism in Lincoln. The Lincoln Administration is known for one of the largest territory stealings in United States history from Native Americans. Lincoln and his administration supported camps very similar to those during the Civil War. The concentration like camps were called Douglas camps. They were used to captured confederate soldiers during the Civil War. It is at these camps where the term “hell on earth” first came into existence. These camps were majorly overcrowded. They were keeping almost double the size of prisoners it was capable of holding. Disease was rampant and there was no source of sanitation.
