“Did Thompson provide persuasive evidence that South’s slave system was morally evil?” I believe that Thompson did provide evidence that the South’s slave system was morally evil. Thompson gives many examples of merciless beatings of slaves to show how inhumane the system treated them. My first example of a beating is this: “At this refusal, they commenced pelting him with stones, chips, or whatever else they could find to throw at him, until they finally forced him down. He sprang from the scaffold, axe in hand, and commenced trying to cut his way through them; but, being defeated, he was knocked down, put in irons, taken to the drove yard, and beaten severely, but not until he had badly wounded two of his captors,”.

To start with, slavery was growing at a rapid rate. New laws made it legal for owners to own enslaved people for their entire lives. They had little or no chance for freedom. Slaves were legally considered property, not people. Slaves were also restricted by a set of laws called Slave Codes; these laws were their rights and rules for living.

The treatment of slaves between the North and the South was drastically different. Slaves in the North typically lived in the same house as their master and worked by themselves, or in small groups (pg. 94). Slaves in the South tended to live in large plantations in which they were housed in plantation outbuildings (pg. 104). The difference between the North and the South in housing and working environment had a direct effect on the integration of African Americans into their new American society. When they were housed in the North with their masters and had limited exposure to other slaves, they tended to adopt the ways of their masters.
Slavery was equally bad for women, men, and children. Labor on the farm was the same for both genders. If you were a different gender then different jobs appointed to you. Both were forced with performing grueling labor, Subjected to mental and physical degradation. Each person was separated from their family and home land.
Family is a place to fall back to for comfort, a place to always fit in, and a place to build memories, but for slaves families were supposed to be those things and they were not. The hardship of watching family members being sold away takes away the happy memories. Children growing up in slavery takes away the comfort of home because they were going to face the harsh reality of slave hood. Slaves never got the solid structure of a family because they could be broken with a blink of an eye. Therefore, while given the opportunity to marry and form families as comfort for the slaves it provided insurance to slave masters, and they proved to be the biggest heartbreaks for slaves themselves.
I think it was a hard time for black people. They worked in the fields and the main house for their white masters. They never got reward for a good job. As a slave you had housing an leftovers to feed your family.
Have you ever wondered how life was for the slaves in the South? Slaves in the South suffered through many consequences. For example, they suffered through many whippings with cow skin if they didn't obey their master, they also got separated from their family mostly the fathers, so, they can be sold to a very mean slave owner. Even if they were living a miserable life on the farms, they had their own culture and they managed to even get married in the farmland or where they worked. Not only did the slaves live on the farm.

Slavery, the War on Black Family While slavery in America was an institution that was started over 400 years ago, the affects were so horrific that it is still felt today by modern day African Americans. Many families had to deal with the constant stress of being sold which made it difficult to have a normal family life. Slaves were sold to pay off debts, an owner dying and his slaves were sold in an estate sale, or when an owner’s children would leave the home to begin a life of their own, they would take slaves with them. Often times, children were not raised by their parents, other family members of someone designated to watch the children because the mother and father had to work long hours and the children were too young to join them.
