Eli Whitney’s invention helped give slavery a new life in the 1700s and 1800s (11). Eli Whitney was a mechanical engineer, who was the first to invent the cotton gin. The cotton gin is a machine that quickly and efficiently separates cotton fibers from their seeds (2). His machine moves like brush like teeth through the raw cotton, which makes the hard task go by faster. The cotton gin grew to produce a thousand pounds of cotton a day in the 18th century (11).
Plantation owners loved having indentured servants because it really helped them save every bit of money they could. Indentured servants did suffer a lot especially with their working schedules but, with the laws that were later passed in Virginia throughout the years and any few freedoms black had were taken away making them feel hopeless at times because of the racial diversity in the America’s at the time. Servants were being optimistic at the time, they were hoping the laws being passed would not affect their rewards for all the hard work they had endeavored throughout the four to seven year long contracts. There was many uncertainty especially with how society would treat them because of their skin color. With all these new laws being passed, most plantation owners feared for their land, indentured servants were not needed as much anymore, plantation owners turned to slavery were they had more power of the individuals and were guaranteed no profit
Although some of the masters mistress were well taken cared of, there were times were the African American women was forced into having sexual relations with the master or his children and were still forced to work outside with the others. The role of an African American women compared to the role of a white women were very different. In antebellum because of their sex most women were assumed to be weaker, and believed to be intellectually and physically suited for only domestic work.

In 1860, there were several million slaves in America. Most of them were African American. They were exploited labor through working about twelve to sixteen hours a day with low wages, even women and children were also exploited labor with lower wages than a normal slaves. The slaves were enslaved in plantation, factories, in the fields, farm, and others. With a strict management regime of the white slaveholders, the slaves had to live with shortages in all aspects such as food, clothing, housing, and illiteracy.

For women, the horrors of slavery were particularly brutal, as they were subjected to unspeakable acts of violence, degradation, and exploitation. Black women were treated as commodities to male slave owners and objects of hatred and jealousy for female slave owners. They were stripped of their humanity, robbed of their freedom, and subjected to unimaginable pain and suffering.
The working conditions were frustrating and stressful. Genders and different cultures were not treated equally and nicely. The living conditions were terrible and in one small little hut made of grass you would have to share it with like forty people. It was very unsanitary and they had to give up living with family and in their own house for three years and little pay.(stated from the article “Plantation Life”)
If a slave dare to escape, they were usually looked for until captured and brought back to face their punishment sometimes this meant being beaten in front of a crowd of other slave owners, put in jail or sometimes even put up for sale again. Slaves families where often separated when sold unless they were the lucky few to be bough together. Slaves were treated very unjustly and where even denied any leftovers that where cooked by them. Their masters would go out of their way to purposely sabotage perfectly good food or bread to avoid being eaten by their slaves. Often bread or certain foods where even counted to avoid being eaten by them as well.

Have you ever wondered how life was for the slaves in the South? Slaves in the South suffered through many consequences. For example, they suffered through many whippings with cow skin if they didn't obey their master, they also got separated from their family mostly the fathers, so, they can be sold to a very mean slave owner. Even if they were living a miserable life on the farms, they had their own culture and they managed to even get married in the farmland or where they worked. Not only did the slaves live on the farm.
Their fathers and husbands would use them as slaves, housewives, objects, etc. They were seen as property to their fathers and husbands. Once a father chose a husband for his daughter, her husband would basically own her. He would misuse and abuse her.

Slavery, the War on Black Family While slavery in America was an institution that was started over 400 years ago, the affects were so horrific that it is still felt today by modern day African Americans. Many families had to deal with the constant stress of being sold which made it difficult to have a normal family life. Slaves were sold to pay off debts, an owner dying and his slaves were sold in an estate sale, or when an owner’s children would leave the home to begin a life of their own, they would take slaves with them. Often times, children were not raised by their parents, other family members of someone designated to watch the children because the mother and father had to work long hours and the children were too young to join them.
