As a Democrat, I believe that President Polk was justified in starting the Mexican-American War. Also, as a strong supporter of Manifest Destiny, also known as Western expansion, I furthermore find reason to believe Polk was justified in initiating war with the Mexican people; being that the Mexican government refused peaceful negotiation. The Americans were the just owners of this western land, and we intended to get it. The Mexican government refused a meeting with our representative to establish the border between Texas and Mexico, along with an offer of 30 million dollars for Western territory. These western territories would provide substantial economic growth for the United States, as well as the obvious: making our nation larger as
When Polk had decided to send our American troops to the disputed land, the Mexicans went and attacked us. In Document B, President Polk wrote to the Senate and House of Representatives. “...dispatched from the American camp up the Rio del Norte, on its (North) bank, to ascertain whether the Mexican troops had crossed, or were preparing to cross, the river...” so right here he’s saying that they are trying to figure out if they were going to cross the territory that was annexed to the US but according to Mexico that was not the boarder and they were “crossing” so then they went and attacked and this is what Polk said about the attack “(They) became engaged with a large body of these (Mexican) troops, and, after a short affair, in which some sixteen (Americans) were killed and wounded, appear to have been surrounded and compelled to surrender...”
America’s declaration of War on Mexico had it’s pros like how much land the got from the war and with the land hungry Americans believing more in Manifest Destiny also it started the civil war which put slavery to a stop. The cons to America’s declaration of War on Mexico were how many lives were lost in this small war, and the relationship between Latin America and American Frist of all the Pros to this declaration of War on Mexico was that America got all of Texas which is a big chunk of land that Mexico doesn't have any more because on (page 376) it states, “America’s total expanse, already vast, was increased by about one third counting Texas-an addition even greater than that of the Louisiana Purchase. A sharp stimulus was given to the
In Document B, President Polk said, “I had ordered and efficient military force to take a position...to meet a threatened invasion of Texas by the Mexican forces….invasion was threatened solely because Texas had determined….to annex herself to our Union,... it was plainly our duty to extend our protection over her citizens and soil.” President Polk then mentioned the attack at the Rio del Norte, where the invasion in Texas happened. This evidence shows the US was justified in going to war with Mexico because Texas was invaded by Mexico, meaning that the U.S. should protect Texas by fighting
“ In the eye of the the (Mexican) government the mobilization of the us army was an outright attack on Mexico” (Doc C). Polk provoked Mexico into war by having many American troops on the land. Some with taylor and some with Slidell. But mexico asked slidell to leave, polk took that as a hint or something. For mexico to protect it self it so they fought back in april 24th 63 men were at the camp in the north bank of rio del norte by having people ready to fight any time.
Polk considers them hostile. Therefore, No the us was not justified to go to war with Mexico. because Polk Provoked The War No the us was not justified to go to war with Mexico because Slavery Expanded. Polk took Texas to make a slave state and mexico did not want that.
3) Polk wanted to negotiate with the United States and was willing to go to war against them for territory gains. He also states that with the act of the war they are fulfilling patriotism and their duty toward their own country. So that is what he tried to resolve the issues between Mexico and the United States. Polk believed in the idea of the Manifest Destiny which played an important factor in his actions. 1)
It was very important for Polk to get Texas. A second reason the Mexican War was justified was there would be more schools and better education for children. In Document A, John L. O’Sullivan mentioned that the more land
Was the United States justified in going to war with Mexico? The United States was not justified in going to war with Mexico because they did not respect their laws, culture, and their beliefs. Second of all, this evidence shows that the US was not justified in going to war because it was useless to fight if the Mexicans were going to lose Texas if it was not now, it would be later on. Truly, it was very clear that the Americans won the war because Texas wanted to become part of the US, and the United States wanted to adopt Texas into their union.
According to President James Polk, “Mexico had passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil.” (Document B) Clearly, this document shows that an affair with the Mexicans inside the border of America caused Americans to become injured and killed. According to Jesus Velasco-Marquez, “Thus occupying the territory in dispute and increasing the possibilities of a confrontation… In the eyes of the [Mexican] government, the mobilization of the US army was an outright attack on Mexico…” (Document C)
The Mexican War was a violent and devastating event between United States and Mexico that lasted from 1846-1848. President Polk had to lie to congress, to make United States declare war on Mexico. Lincoln considered President Polk provoked as a vote-fixing device and hoped the arguments against the war would cause his reputation in the United States House of Representative. Lincoln claims President Polk misrepresented the whole thing that the Presidents Polk evidence was not true by any means. Lincoln lays out evidence that president Polk gave is either incorrect or irrelevant reasons to gain support from congress.
When Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, a string of ruthless dictators and weak presidents made Mexico an easy target for its powerful neighbor, the United States. The US swooped in to expand its territory and its popular institution of slavery. By doing so, the US started a war with Mexico that was justified for illegitimate reasons. The Mexican-American War was not justified because the US took Mexico’s land for the expansion of slavery, and justified their taking advantage of Mexico when it was politically weak by hiding behind Manifest Destiny.
and Mexican forces had taken place in U.S. territory.” “Further, legislators were at odds over whether Polk had the right to unilaterally declare that a state of war
If Mexicans saw armed American troops in the land, they would think it’s an attack. Even knowing that, he sent the troops in the land, and found an excuse for
As stated before, the US was justified in going to war with Mexico because of three reasons, Americans were killed, Texas was already annexed, and Manifest Destiny allows it. The United states had many superb reasons for going to war with Mexico. This essay is significant because it helps explain the United States’ choice to go to war with
