Was World War I unavoidable or was it needed? From the beginning of time man has had conflict with each other, some were supposed to be and some could have not been. This remains to be a matter of opinion in some cases, but not in others. When it comes to World War I, was it avoidable or was it inevitable? Many things happened that may have caused World War I to come about like, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 . The assassination sparked a major alliance among many nations. One which alliance, was with the United States of America. Within weeks, the major powers were at war and the conflict soon spread around the world. This war had been brewing for years before it got to the point of war. The United States tried to keep itself out of this war even when Germany sunk the U- Boat, the British Ocean liner Lusitanian, in May 1915. This attack killed 128 United States citizens with a total of 1,200 causalities. Through all of this, President Woodrow Wilson vowed to stay in a neutral state as long as it did not affect us directly. With this restriction being lifted, it meant that German war commanders could give the authorization to sink all ships that were working with the allies in efforts to get Britain to surrender. The primary area of focus for Germany’s attacks would be the ships that where crossing the Atlantic coming form the United States and Canada. The first attack happened, which was the American cargo ship the Housatonic. This put the United states on shaky ground. In February of 1917 Woodrow Wilson asked congress to pass a 250 million dollars arms appropriation so that the United States would be ready for war if needed. We never intended to need
