Irving incorporates characteristics of exaggerated characters, astonishing events, and also conveys a positive message. Rip Van Winkle, a story about a man that lived in the Catskill Mountains located in New York. Rip Van Winkle contains interesting characters and without those characters there would not be a story. The house he lived in was neglected and extremely run-down. What was suppose to be small farm, was a full of weeds. His wife Dame Van Winkle is always nagging at him because he always had to be prodded to do any work around the house. Whenever, Rip wanted to escape his nagging wife, he would go hang out with Nicholas Vedder. Nicholas Vedder was the owner of the inn, you could always find him on his porch smoking a pipe and making small talk with others. There are interesting events present in Rip Van Winkle. It is crucial because it spiciness up the story. In order to escape his wife, he would take his gun and his pet dog Wolf, and go hunting up high in the Catskill Mountains. Shots after shots Rip grew more exhausted, so he laid down. He finally decided to get up to go back home. On his way home he noticed couples of men down the hill playing, and drinking their rum. It seemed like fun, so he joined them. While playing a few games and drinking, he grew drunker and drunker. Until, it leads him into passing out.
