Washington Irving known as a story writer gave a picture of a fascinating character in his short story. The character is called Rip Van Winkle. The tale was in a Dutch village, where settlers believe in superstition and ghost tales and sits to discuss politics. For instance, Irving said, “for I know the vicinity of our old Dutch settlements to have been very subject to supernatural events and appearances” (Hughes 198).
