Abstract Expressionism was started in the 1940’s right after World War II, and it was started in New York. The artists who used this style were generally young men who had seen the horrors and darkness that had resulted from World War II. The artists hoped to draw attention to these problems with a new, meaningful style of art. The style is still practiced, but is not as widespread as it was when it was first thought up. This style of art came around after World War II, so the war influenced the artists’ different works. They used splashes of color to make the world completely abstract and in turn made it very difficult, or impossible to tell what is going on in their works. Kandinsky was a Russian art theorist who created the world’s first truly abstract painting. He was born in Moscow, Russia on December 16, 1866 and died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France on December 13, 1944. His style of art started out as mostly realistic with a little abstractness thrown in for effect. As he grew older, he began to obscure his art and made it abstract because he experienced many different things throughout his life. By using abstract ways of painting, he sought to capture an object’s “inner beauty”, and this became a central aspect to all of his art. Kandinsky once said, “Lend your ears to music, open your eyes to painting, and... stop thinking! Just ask yourself whether the work has enabled you to 'walk about' into a hitherto unknown world. If the answer is yes, what more do you want?” With this quote, Kandinsky was talking about how abstract art can be considered art as long as the piece brings you happiness when you view it.
