Imagining I am Tim O 'Brien writing the water buffalo passage I would embellish the details making the animal a baby to entice a larger audience. Based on the idea that the true parts of a war story are those that are unthinkable and not relatable, this detail is one I had to make up. Having done this, it was possible for me to reach those that typically do not enjoy war stories and hopefully allowing them to empathize with the content. Specifically, I wanted to focus in on females "of kindly temperament and human politics". This isn 't the only time I would use a choice set of words to help the female reader relate.
