The play “Metamorphoses” by Mary Zimmerman is mainly about life transformation. In the beginning of the play Zimmerman describe how water is the creation of the life and as well as the destruction of life. In the other words, water is essential to our survivability but too much it will kill us. Zimmerman give the audiences many stories to give an idea on how people can change as they live their lives facing their consequences from the choices they make. For example, King Midas a very rich and greedy man who shuns his own daughter for being disruptive during his speech about caring his family. He was granted a wish by Bacchus to turn whatever he touches into gold. King Midas is blinded by his own greed he accidently turns his daughter into gold and realize that money isn’t important to him. He begged to revert his doings but Bacchus cannot grant him that wish unless he seek the mystic pool which he did in the end. As you walk into the theatre, there is a display of blue light and the stage area was misty to show some sense of a mythical scenery. In addition, the use of water in the pool is critical because the water is used to change the characters like a ritual or a baptism. In the play, there are many stories being told and yet, there is one plot that all of them have in common. That is plot is transformation. For example, King Midas change from greedy to generous, tragic love story of Alcyone and Ceyx who transformed into seabirds as a sign of mercy from the gods, and the story of Baucis and Philemon who invited two gods who were disguised as beggars without hesitation, they were granted a wish that they will never see each other die to suffer any grief and the gods transform they house into a grand palace and the couple into trees that intertwined with each
