Kelcie Smith Jerrine McCaffrey Film 101 December 15, 2016 Themes in The Martian and The Revenant The Martian is a pretty intense movie in its own right. Stranded on Mars without a hope of rescue any time soon, Mark Watney is stuck and has to figure out how to survive. He is forced to face the constant possibility of equipment failure or sudden disaster, which he faces every now and then. That is why I think the main theme here is fear.
Worldwide, millions of people are consuming fast food, unaware of the mental and physical consequences it can cause to their body. The fast food industry lacks to label the food they advertise, leaving individual’s clueless and with little, to no choice. In the article An Equal Shot: Big Fat America the author claims that “The real solution here is to give people the choice to eat organic foods that are in season and are locally produced. But that can only work if people are informed, and that means more labeling.” On the other hand, if the fast food industry informed people about the ingredients they are putting into their bodies and labeled more of their food items, it would be no one, but the individual to blame.
The story “The Martian” is a compelling drama about astronaut Mark Watney who gets stranded on Mars after an aborted mission, and has to struggle to survive until NASA can rescue him. It was self published by Andy Weir in 2011, and was a best selling science fiction publication. This led to its development as a film in 2015 directed by Ridley Scott and featuring Matt Damon as the lead actor. It quickly topped box office sales and received great reviews from almost all critics. But beyond all of the success, these two versions of the story have some important differences that change their purpose.
(Roach 318). The novel Packing for Mars was written to give insight to the reader of the challenges of space travel and how these challenges were dealt with. Mary Roach shares detailed factual information through transcripts and conversations
Firstly, the author claims that because of the many technological advances due to the "Space Race", a commitment to a manned mission to Mars will produce similar results. Although there are many similarities between committing to sending a man to the moon and to sending a man to mars, it false for the author to assume that there will be similar technological and humanitarian advances. The 1960's is a very different time period from today and as a result, it is unknown whether a manned mission to Mars will prove to be a worthy investment. Additionally, a large part of the "space Race" can be attributed to the competition between the USSR and the USA during the Cold War. The competition for becoming the leader in space technology was very fierce and was very politically driven, allowing for huge amounts of money to be invested in space technology.
“If the oxygenator breaks down, I’ll suffocate. If the water reclaimer breaks down, I’ll die of thirst. If the Hab breaches, I’ll just kind of explode. If none of these things happen, I’ll eventually run out of food and starve to death.” (Weir 7).
This style show the differences between someone who is stuck with their thoughts and themselves fro company, between a densely populated work space. The log format of the book tends to be much more introspective, while the NASA perspective has more characters, while focusing more on current events. This technique of writing makes the differences clear, showing how your way of thinking changes with long period of isolation. When communication is started between these two narratives, Mark Watney expresses huge joy because of his great want for at least conversation with another person. Once he can speak with them, he gains a greater chance for survival creating motivation for him to do everything possible in order to see another human life
Now, he has to fight for survival and face the constant possibility of natural disasters against Mars: a barren wasteland. There are few structures that Watney is able to go in, one of them is called the Hab. The Hab is the closest thing he can call as his home and without it he has no choice but to face the fact that he is completely detached from humanity. Eventually, he loses it after getting “out of sight of the Hab” (Weir 7.100). In Rebecca Solnit’s essay, “Walking and the Suburbanized Psyche” she insists that interacting with nature is vital to the health of our bodies, minds, and imaginations.
It also says that it will require 44 metric tons of weight to land on Mars and N.A.S.A. has only been able to land 1 metric ton at a time. I personally think it 's not a good idea to go to space in a spaceship that you cannot trust. In conclusion I would not want to risk the chance of living on Mars. Right now I am perfectly happy with life on Earth and see no reason in fixing something that is not broken.
As well, figurative language in his speech showed the passion and bravery the astronauts had. “As they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye and ‘slipped the surly bonds of earth’ to ‘touch the face of god’” (8). His use of personification justifies to all citizens that the journey that turned into a disaster was not their last. It was only the beginning for them.
In this essay I will discuss three of the many problems Mark Watney faces in the Martian. The first major problem Watney faces is getting stranded and wounded on Mars. The second problem Watney faces is how he is going to survive on mars till help can come. The final problem he faces is how is he going to get to the Ares, so he can leave Mars. The first problem Mark Watney face on Mars is getting injured and becoming stranded on Mars.
The reason why I say that is because when we’re first introduced he’s very quippy with his friend, Rick Martinez, while collecting soil samples for the hab. If anything maybe his humor became more pronounce because without the ability to laugh at your problem you might be able to elevate your stress or even conquer it. Ridley’s Cinametography in The Martian as optimistic and majestic Because through out several scenes Ridley uses Marks video journals as an insightful and humorous way Whatney passes time on Mars while trying to stay alive. Secondly he uses Mars’ unique landscape to show the majesty of the red giant, while cementing in Marks solitude.
Earth is slowly going extinct and it’s up to Joseph Cooper (Mathew McConaughey) and the rest of the Endurance crew to save mankind by travelling through a wormhole to a completely different galaxy to find habitable planets so the human race may continue. Cooper is faced with the choice of staying with his kids, Murphy and Tom which will eventually
