The El Paso Museum of Art had a lot of interesting artwork that caught my attention, however the one that stood out of the most was a color lithograph painting called “We Love, We give, We Die, We Go Someplace, We Love” by Bert Long. Bert Long is an American artist, born in the Fifth Ward in Houston, Texas in 1940. Long was named the Texas Artist of the Year in 1990 and studied under the Rome Prize Fellowship from the American Academy in 1990 and 1991. The painting created by Long was made in 1996 and is a Color lithograph. This piece of art is part of The Harmon & Harriet Kelley Collection. The artist made sure to have a good mixture between the curved lines he used and the organic shapes he used. Long as well gave the painting life with the colors he used. With the colors alone and shapes he made sure to express his feelings to the viewers, however it isn’t as clear as other pieces of art. Long made the painting very complex but if taken part by part, and examined to detail you can see what the artist is trying to express. After looking it into depth I started to realize this painting has a story behind it. For me this painting represents life as it is, from the origins to the very last moments of life. This piece of art represents the natures of the world by utilizing the waves of the ocean, the beautiful green trees, the bright sun and at the same time it intertwines aspects of human beings using the bone, heart and even our religious belief by including a cross in the bottom right of the unfinished blue triangle. What intrigued me the most was the sun with the skull in the middle, at that point is where I realized the meaning of the title of the art work. We love, we give, we die, this is the cycle of life and that’s what the painting is trying to depict. Overall the way the lines, shapes, and colors are used makes the painting come as a whole. Even when the painting looks simple and dull it has a very powerful meaning to
