Elizabeth Leefolt did not come from a necessarily poor family, however, her lack of significant monetary inheritance and her husband’s low income mean that she cannot fully integrate into wealthy high society. As a result, Elizabeth conceals her family’s lack of wealth with symbols of class, specifically by hiring a maid whom she can barely afford to pay. The majority of high/middle- class white female characters portrayed in the novel lead seemingly pointless lives; their husbands take little interest in them and they have no ambition to work.
