In the wearable technology segment, solar-powered clothing, which comes under the domain of performance apparel, is still in an introductory stage. However, solar-powered wearable has gained popularity due to its functionality and pro-environmental attributes. Since the major problem of wearable electronics is the necessity to rely on conventional power supplies like batteries which are usually physically heavy and have a short lifetime, solar-powered energy sources that are flexible and light can be incorporated into clothing and accessories without being a burden to the user. A solar backpack is similar to a traditional backpack and it usually resembles a laptop backpack coupled with a solar panel integrated into the top of the bag. These solar backpacks can be used to charge many different devices like mobile phones, mp3 players and digital cameras while someone is on a hike or walking around. They can be of great help during an emergency situation as it will ensure that one always has enough power to charge their cell phone so that at least a few calls can be made.
However these solar backpacks are not designed to fully charge large devices such as laptops. They usually contain a small battery that is charged by the solar panel and this can be used to charge a number of different smaller devices.
