Maps and dreams written by Hugh Brody follows his eighteen-month long journey spent with the Athapaskan Indigenous peoples in Northeastern British Columbia. The land- use and occupancy study is a combination of oral history and accounts of European explorers, in an attempt to understand the economic systems of Indigenous peoples based on hunting and trapping. The odd numbered chapters follow a small group of people known as the Beaver people, who were asked to create maps of their trapping and hunting grounds. The even numbered chapters report on the economic boom of the northern frontier and the influence it had on Indigenous groups. Richard was 66 years old during his 200 mile canoeing expedition, he did not think that he was going to make it happen. However, he accomplished what he felt he needed to do so he can open minds about a place that needs their help. He captured what was hidden in the river and wanted to tell his story about it.

Jon Krakauer attempts to understand the inner-workings of a man named Chris McCandless, who goes on an outrageous journey into the Alaskan wilderness, in his book Into The Wild. Krakauer romanticizes McCandless’s reckless venture by telling of his own escapades, however, McCandless’s mission should not be idolized. McCandless had overestimated himself and underestimated the wilderness when he went on his deadly adventure. McCandless went around a large portion of the lower half of North America and survived with little help. He believed because he could survive without provisions in these areas, he could also do so in Alaska.

The Documentary closely follows the chief of the Attawapiskat tribe and portrays the difficult living conditions endured by local residents. These problematic conditions include the lack of clean water, electricity and basic housing especially during the intolerable cold Canadian winter. Joe Sacco’s non-fiction graphic comic Paying the Land explores the nuances within the Dene community, an Indigenous group that resides in Canada’s Northwest Territories. Unlike Western notions of land ownership, the Dene believe that the land owns them. It stands at the core of their existence, integrated into their livelihoods. However, since the subarctic Canadian Northwest Territories has abundant natural resources like oil, gas, and diamonds that interested the Western community, this posed a threat to the Dene’s customs and ways of thinking.
The frontier ideology is defined as an allure of nature that is culturally spread and shaped by people’s ideals of how the wilderness should truly be. The problematic effects resulted by McCandless’ journey into the undomesticated land of Alaska are analogous to the quandaries that the frontier ideology creates for our environmental. Just as the ideology is embedded in his mind; it is also embedded in the minds of many others. However, McCandless story can actually teach us about the plights with our culture and in doing so, allows us to move forward. This has turned into a myth in which many believe that the most important parts of nature are areas that have been untouched by human hands.
The Alaskan Bush is one of the hardest places to survive without any assistance, supplies, skills, and little food. Jon Krakauer explains in his biography, Into The Wild, how Christopher McCandless ventured into the Alaskan Bush and ultimately perished due to lack of preparation and hubris. McCandless was an intelligent young man who made a few mistakes but overall Krakauer believed that McCandless was not an ignorant adrenalin junkie who had no respect for the land. Krakauer chose to write this biography because he too had the strong desire to discover and explore as he also ventured into the Alaskan Bush when he was a young man, but he survived unlike McCandless. Krakauer’s argument was convincing because he gives credible evidence that McCandless was not foolish like many critics say he was.
