Maps and dreams written by Hugh Brody follows his eighteen-month long journey spent with the Athapaskan Indigenous peoples in Northeastern British Columbia. The land- use and occupancy study is a combination of oral history and accounts of European explorers, in an attempt to understand the economic systems of Indigenous peoples based on hunting and trapping. The odd numbered chapters follow a small group of people known as the Beaver people, who were asked to create maps of their trapping and hunting grounds. The even numbered chapters report on the economic boom of the northern frontier and the influence it had on Indigenous groups. Jon Krakauer attempts to understand the inner-workings of a man named Chris McCandless, who goes on an outrageous journey into the Alaskan wilderness, in his book Into The Wild. Krakauer romanticizes McCandless’s reckless venture by telling of his own escapades, however, McCandless’s mission should not be idolized. McCandless had overestimated himself and underestimated the wilderness when he went on his deadly adventure. McCandless went around a large portion of the lower half of North America and survived with little help. He believed because he could survive without provisions in these areas, he could also do so in Alaska.

He describes the Refuge as “magnificent,” “timeless,” and “a symbol of our national heritage.” This strong language serves to convey the depths of Carter’s passion for the Refuge, and helps the reader to feel some of that passion as well. This use of emotion helps to build Carter’s case as the audience becomes more connected to the place he wants to protect. After describing the Refuge using such grand terms, Carter goes on to describe the threat faced by the Refuge in similar fashion, describing the development of the land as a potential “tragedy” that would “forever destroy the wilderness character of America’s only Arctic Refuge,” as well as endangering the “precious human rights” of the area’s indigenous people. The Documentary closely follows the chief of the Attawapiskat tribe and portrays the difficult living conditions endured by local residents. These problematic conditions include the lack of clean water, electricity and basic housing especially during the intolerable cold Canadian winter. Moreover, when a colony around the world is suffering it is our duty as human beings to help them through their difficult times.
The frontier ideology is defined as an allure of nature that is culturally spread and shaped by people’s ideals of how the wilderness should truly be. The problematic effects resulted by McCandless’ journey into the undomesticated land of Alaska are analogous to the quandaries that the frontier ideology creates for our environmental. Just as the ideology is embedded in his mind; it is also embedded in the minds of many others. However, McCandless story can actually teach us about the plights with our culture and in doing so, allows us to move forward. This has turned into a myth in which many believe that the most important parts of nature are areas that have been untouched by human hands.

The Alaskan Bush is one of the hardest places to survive without any assistance, supplies, skills, and little food. Jon Krakauer explains in his biography, Into The Wild, how Christopher McCandless ventured into the Alaskan Bush and ultimately perished due to lack of preparation and hubris. McCandless was an intelligent young man who made a few mistakes but overall Krakauer believed that McCandless was not an ignorant adrenalin junkie who had no respect for the land. Krakauer chose to write this biography because he too had the strong desire to discover and explore as he also ventured into the Alaskan Bush when he was a young man, but he survived unlike McCandless. Krakauer’s argument was convincing because he gives credible evidence that McCandless was not foolish like many critics say he was.
