Manifest Destiny brought an age of expansion and exploration upon the United States throughout the 1800s. The vast Great Plains were unexplored, and held lots of promise and opportunity for new communities and businesses. With the establishment of the railroad system, transportation became much more reliable and efficient, sending a wave of settlers to the West. Railroad companies also posted many advertisements that encouraged settlers to buy plots of land for reasonable prices. The railroad during this time played a key role in Western Expansion by giving people access to fertile and open land, uniting communities together, and lowering transportation costs, but inflicted cruel treatment on those who worked on the railroads.
Traveling thousands of miles through dangerous paths American pioneers took on hardships as they sought westward in hopes of a better life. The journey westward began in the early 1800s when the US exploded with new territories nearly tripling the United States' size. It all started in 1803 when the US bought the Louisiana Territory from France. Quickly, many farmers picked up their belongings and headed out west to the rich, fertile land for a fresh start. Next, Andrew Jackson invaded Florida claiming it for the US which was also another opportunity for settlers to begin a new life.
From sea to shining sea. That line from “America the Beautiful” defines the goal of the United States in the 1840’s. But why was this the goal? What caused this drive for expansion? During the mid-19th century, Americans set their sights of land west of the Louisiana Purchase.
From 1817-1825, immigrants and native New Yorkers alike worked year round by hand and with the help of animals to complete the canal, which finally opened in October 26, 1825. Early on, horses and mules worked the canal system taking turns with boats in long shifts carrying cargo with towlines. At the beginning, the canal could accommodate thirty tons of freight. Travel on the canal to Buffalo from Albany took about five days. When traveled by stage coach, the route took about two weeks.

When European settlers arrived along the East Coast, they developed a new doctrine called the manifest destiny that would guide their path (Manifest). The project to join the East and West Coast; which once could be considered as an impossible task, gradually gained steam (pardon the pun).
Territories began to expand in the 1800’s. In the 1820’s Mexico won independence from Spain and Americans’ began to migrate there. 10 years later Mexico was surprised to see how much the population and culture grew in Texas. In the late 1830’s Texas petitioned to be part of the United States.1 However during this time the expansion of slavery and keeping peace with Mexico was in issue. 2 Finally in 1845 Texas became part of America.
The westward expansion of of the U.S. began to happen around the 1800s. during that time the social opportunities increased since many people moved to the west because the government was paying them or giving them free land. The political opportunities did not increased as much since most of the people moving westwards were poor or immigrants and only white males had the right to participate in those events. The economic opportunities increased for the people who moved westward because of the gold rush and the opportu tires that were provided.

After the War of 1812 and the Civil War the American started moving to the west including the Great Plains as per the request of the government. The Native Americans, which helped expand, pass the Mississippi River, this move began with just one word move west young man, and they did. These Immigrants came to the land of plenty. The idea of an American "empire" and "imperialism" (American History 1865-Present: End of Isolation) 1865 to 1914 American expansion was encouraged in this time frame.
The United States American expansionism in the 1890's was motivated by the search of new markets and investment opportunities. Businesses created the expansion because the economy was so prosperous at this time. Mechanization and mass production allowed the industries in America to grow, which led to the growth of business, consumer goods and the overall American corporation. According to the textbook, the businesses interest shaped diplomatic and military strategy. Additionally, farm production increased, transportation systems improved and railroads were a significant factor.

Learning specific reading and writing skills is the focus of these groups, not the content they are reading. Students will be moved in and out of groups based on their needs. In this unit, fifth grade students will begin by hearing a read aloud story about westward expansion in the United States.
Was the westward expansion of the United States just an inevitable or unjust and easy to stop? Manifest destiny was not a god given right, it wasn’t helpful to the other countries, we weren’t enlightening anyone. All of that is just a cover of our power hungry government. I am not against the expansion of America, I think it’s great if we buy countries, or they join us.

The Westward Expansion all started when America made the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. There were many benefits from the purchase for the US that the French didn’t realize before they sold it. The purchase gave the US access to the Mississippi river which allowed for expansion of river trade to the North and South from the center of the US. The port city of New Orleans was bought by the US and its prosperity benefited the US greatly. The US sent Lewis and Clark west to investigate the land they purchased.
America’s expansion seemed to cause major instability as it transitioned into independence. It caused wars with Britain and Mexico, but formed a strong relationship with France. However, this is the only case in which some stability is caused by expansion. Debatably one of the most destabilising outcomes of westward expansion was the slavery argument.
For some, it was destiny to move west. Although there were many conflicts and disagreements between ourselves and others, it was destiny to move west because of overpopulation, new inventions of transportation methods, and new opportunities. In the 19th Century, overpopulation was one of the major reasons for Westward Expansion. Immigrants were flooding into America for new opportunities and new ways of life and there was just not enough land to suffice the needs for all of the people. These immigrants were arriving in America in the port cities on the East Coast.
