Around 395 AD, the Roman Empire was split into the East and the West. The Western Roman Empire’s capital was Rome and it lasted until 476. The Western Empire had dualism between the monarch and the Pope. The Eastern Roman Empire’s capital was Constantinople and it lasted until 1453. The Eastern Empire had symphonia between the church and the state. The split between the east and the west caused splits in both the church and the government.
In 410 AD, the Visigoths attacked the Roman Empire. This six-day terror was called the Sack of Rome. Although everything was destroyed, they didn’t destroy the basilicas of Saint Peter and Paul. Augustine states, “We see then that the two cities were created by two kinds of love: the earthly city was created by self-love reaching the point of contempt for God, the Heavenly City by the love of God carried as far as contempt of self,” (Augustine 426, 14.28). The city of man is temporary, ran by pride, loves power, and is the lesser good. Some examples of lesser goods would be earthly pleasures such as money, food, etc. The city of God is eternal, ran by humility, serves one another in love, is the higher good, and is pilgrimage while on earth. All these lesser goods are related to the highest good. Lesser goods have to be directed to a higher good. If the lesser good is not connected to a highest good, then it becomes evil. These cities can also be described as the earthly city (self-love) and the heavenly city (love of God). “We distribute the human race into two kinds of men, one living according to man, the other living according to God. Mystically, we call them two Cities, or two societies of men: the one of which is predestined to reign eternally with God, the other to suffer eternal punishment with the devil.” (Augustine
