Westlake Lanes suffered after the loss of its first owner- Dane Sugar- suddenly passed away. Due to his spontaneous death, Dane Sugar was not able to train someone the functions of his business. Due to the fact Dane Sugar handled all the financials himself and brought in the majority of the costumers based on personal relationships, it left whoever took over his position in a tough spot. The board of Westlake Lanes automatically promoted the employee with the most experience working in the establishment to General Manager. The one key fact to remember is that Shirley Smith lacked any sort of management experience, which lead Westlake Lanes into a harder spot to come out of. Givens’ was able to see patterns in employees as well as understand how each one viewed their job. Givens also noticed that their were not job descriptions- which left employees confused on what they were and were not allowed to do. Givens however did not decided to define their roles alone- she invited her employees to make these descriptions along side her. Givens also invited them to come up with a mission statement for Westlake Lanes. This was a great example for a new leader coming into a business with employees that have been there for years. It not only helped create a team-like community of employees, but it also gave them the ability to contribute to the new vision of Westlake Lanes. Givens also was able to start meetings with her employees every week to talk about how they are doing, and then end the meeting in a casual game of bowling to increase community in the workplace. Graduating from a highly rated business school Givens knew the importance of keeping track of finances. As stated in the case she was able to cut fixed expenses by 8% in 2009. This was done simply by comparing rates between businesses, and canceling out excessive services. This is a general task that a manager would preform but not something no one with no experience would think about
