Why did the colonists expand westward? Well, at the time the colonists were very close together on the East coast and many people wanted to explore their living westward away from most of the civilization, to make their own. I am thankful for westward expansion because I live in west. The westward expansion was a great help to everyday life. This had great exploration westward for the brave people that decided to endure this excruciating journey.
What was Westward expansion? Westward expansion held a series of voyages for America to conquer more land so they could reach the Western boarder. In the 19th century, Americans across the United States believed all of North America belongs to the United States and were determined to conquer the land and wouldn’t let the problems they faced along the way stop them. The Mexican American war proved to the world that America is serious and ready to fight for what they believe they deserve. The United States won a series of premeditated and unpremeditated battles against Mexico due to its strong army, well thought out plans and strategies.

I believe that the expansion of the frontier after the Civil war played a significant role in easing the social tensions. After the civil war, in the late 19th century, America experienced several changes such as unprecedented process of urbanization and industrialization, the rise of the few huge corporations, various technological advancements, and several rights movements. Because of the westward expansion, people got various opportunities to improve their living. Several reasons behind the westward expansion were population growth, the revolution in transportation, money, and free or slave state debate. During this time, coal, steel and railroads became an immense source of wealth and power.

Manifest Destiny was the belief of the American citizens that God gave them the right to move West to conquer the land on it and to spread their values across the continent. There are many good things that happened from the Westward Expansion, such as being able to gain more resources and industrialize the cities. The industrial revolution was a time of new manufacturing processes in Great Britain, Europe, and the United States. Many of these things during this revolution included production methods replacing hand production, and new iron processes.

The port city of New Orleans was bought by the US and its prosperity benefited the US greatly. The US sent Lewis and Clark west to investigate the land they purchased.
In the early 1800’s the founding fathers and citizens of the early United States decided that the east coast was not enough for them and they wanted more. More land to conquer, more people to come to their country, more respect from other countries, and to get this they were willing to do anything. The United States expanded west in the 1800’s when the territory west of the mississippi was found to be arable and habitable. After gaining the louisiana territory, which was most of the land west of the Mississippi, which made the US over twice as large as it was before. Then the US continued expanding - gaining Florida, Texas and other states that are now in the US.
During the first half of the 19 century America expanded west through land purchases,wars, and treaties. The trails to the west were the oregan trail and the santa fe trail. In 1803 the United States bought a huge amount of territory. During this time when settlers came to the west they moved Indianas off there land. The new lands were first made in to territory’s.
For some, it was destiny to move west. Although there were many conflicts and disagreements between ourselves and others, it was destiny to move west because of overpopulation, new inventions of transportation methods, and new opportunities. In the 19th Century, overpopulation was one of the major reasons for Westward Expansion. Immigrants were flooding into America for new opportunities and new ways of life and there was just not enough land to suffice the needs for all of the people. These immigrants were arriving in America in the port cities on the East Coast.
