The story of how a few moments of pride can construct such a vast vendetta. Pride and Prejudice is a novel that advocates the change in women’s role and rights. Whale talk is another book that shares a similar message, encouraging people to change their attitudes towards society due to racism. The novel begins when two wealthy men arrive in a town filled with girls that are in search of marriage. The Bennets try to take advantage of this opportunity by meeting them at a ball. One of the men, Darcy starts out being egocentric and uncivil leading to a prejudice directed against him, by Elizabeth. Austen portrayed, “He made her an offer in this very room, and she refused him. The consequence of it is, that Lady Lucas will have a daughter married before I have, and that Longbourn estate is just as much entailed as ever. The Lucases are very artful people indeed, sister. Throughout the story, Mrs. Bennet obsessively encourages her daughters to marry for wealth. Mrs. Bennet’s determination is obvious when Elizabeth, is given the option of marrying Mr. Collins. Austen exaggerates, “Pray do not talk of that odious man. I do think it is the hardest thing in the world, that your estate would be entailed away from your own children; and I am sure if I had been you, I should have tried long ago to do something or other about it” (Austen 52). Correspondingly, Austen produces irony through this circumstance because the Bennet’s are at the mercy of one of the most despicable characters, Mr. Collins.
