However, in the sense of opportunity, Ann can start fresh with her life. The use of children in the Sierra Leone Civil War was widespread, with up to 10,000 children taking part in the conflict and up to eighty percent of RUF forces between the ages of seven and fourteen. Ishmael is one of these children. In his memoir, A Long Way Gone, Lieutenant Jabati and his men exploit several techniques to transform these frightened children into ruthless killing machines. They do this through the use of drugs, pop culture, as well as character and emotional manipulation. Tactics like these create habits and addictions that are almost impossible to break.
They get burned, broken, and lost. The higher our aspirations, the harder we hit the ground when we inevitably fall. The more we hope, the more those hopes are shattered. Fate, oh you cruel, unyielding maiden, so fair yet so tormentous.

In Susan Wolf’s article “The Meaning of Lives” she argues a meaningful life is engaged in positive projects to some degree of success. She also believes that the pursuits with meaning have an objective value that connects with the rest humanity. Susan Wolf’s did not write about her thoughts on the concept of plugging oneself into an experience machine like described by Christopher Grau in “Bad Dreams, Evil Demons, and the Experience Machine”, but her argument for what gives meaning to a life makes it clear that she would argue someone should choose to not plug in. The reason a person would choose to plug into an experience machine is because they could live out all of their fantasies and avoid all the discomfort experienced in real life. But
As this book ends, it questions about if there is life worth living. Mankind today has destroyed the idea of truth their ancestors had created. Without this truth, it becomes harder for people to experience what people went through to find meaning. For example, Dr. King’s legacy would not have influence people today if he had no purpose. His legacy cause today’s people to look at racism as a scar against all races.
Forgiving someone is one of the best things you could do. However, for you to forgive someone, you must accept what has happened and be ready to move on. Forgiving someone gives them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and allows them to move on as well. By accepting the past, you might find reasoning within the mistakes of the others, and give you as better understanding of how you should act. Forgiveness is a large part of The First Stone, and within the story is a valuable lesson:

Man Vs Self: Trevor In Graham Greene’s “The Destructors” conflicted is a character trait that Trevor prominently displays, as his attempts to bring down divisions within societies interfere with his past and current life. Trevor is one of the many people who have been negatively impacted by the effects of World War II as he and his family have lost their place in the upper hierarchy. Soon after, Trevor becomes the new leader of The Wormsley Common gang, a group of teenage boys living in a rough part of London. Under Trevor’s leadership the gang goes to visit one of the more “beautiful” older houses around the area which is being held up by “wooden struts” (44).
Giving second chances, that's what Cynthia Rylant the author of the short story “Stray” wanted to teach us. Just because something or maybe someone isn’t cared for or loved doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to be. In the story, Doris clearly gave a puppy a chance by taking the stray, abandoned on the street puppy into her home and nurturing it. In the end her dad did too by having a heart and not leaving the puppy at the pound.

Her mom would quiz Jing Mei on capitals of certain places, only to discover that
