The Civil Rights Movement was a time filled with racial discrimination and segregation. During this time of hate, it was difficult for many people to do the simplest simple life necessities. The Secret Life of Bees takes place during the thick of the movement when the Civil Rights Act was passed. Lily Owens is a 14 year old white girl from just outside of Sylvian, South Carolina. Lily lives with her dad, T. Ray Owens, and Rosaleen who is at the house the majority of the time working for T. Ray.
Multiple times in the story, these three worker bees are found collecting honey, distributing honey, or working in general, much like a typical worker bee.

In the 1960’s, the peak of the Civil Rights Movement had been reached. The other races besides whites were gaining rights, which was revolutionary given the racism that took place. Although all the states had to agree with allowing black people to have rights, there were also many people who refused to change their ways. This caused hatred of the other races to an even more extreme level, deaths such as Martin Luther King Jr., and impacted the lives of millions. In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, bees are a recurring image in the story and epigraphs that provides guidance for Lily and symbolizes the important lessons she learns as well as her search for a mother. Throughout the book, Lily uses bees to guide her choices when she lacks a sense of direction. At the beginning of the novel, Lily is upset with her father and unsure what to do. She collects bees in a jar and decides to let them free, however when she unscrews the cap they do not escape though they easily can.
One could look at a bee hive as a single living entity (otherwise known as a Superorganism).They ingest and digest food,regulate water control and achieve locomotion as well as many other things that humans do to stay alive. This is were the similarities stop. Bees are raised for certain jobs that are never changed. Queens lay eggs,Drones mate with queens,and workers well….. They work.
The Secret Life of Bees was written by Sue Monk Kidd. It's an emotional story about a little girl in search of her mothers past, but along the way she discovers herself and who she really is. It's based in 1964 in South Carolina. A little girl named Lilly runs away from her abusive father to follow her mothers footsteps in order to discover her past. After escaping from her father, Lilly and Rosaleen(Lilly's nanny) came across a general store.

Lilly’s mother died when she was younger, and she didn’t remember much about her. There are many sections in the book where Lilly felt unhappy because she didn’t have a mother like other girls her age. As stated in an article by the New York times titled, ¨”What's the buzz with honeybees¨ written by John Douglass states , ¨Their are over 20,00 species of bees that serve as vital pollinators¨ (35 douglass). None of which are the honeybee. In addition these bees are native extremely vital a stated in the text ¨ Over 75 percent of the crops in the united states rely on natural pollinators.¨ ( 55, douglass). Furthermore issue being that honeybees have been killing competing bees and pollinators.

Every day millions of honey bees fly back and forth from their hives. They pollinate a plethora of flowers and produce great amounts of honey. Many people do not realize what bees do for them and their communities. Without bees, people would not have any fresh flowers or produce. The bee population helps provide growth to one-third of the food in the world (Haltiwanger).
So what makes these bees so important? In order to survive, bees must gather pollen and nectar and bring it home to their colony. While they are moving from flower
Bees do not go far, so they pollinate local areas rather than an extended amount of land. Patricia E. Salkin says, “Small-scale beekeeping has proven to be especially popular among people looking to obtain more of their food from local resources.” Not only does it help the people and the wildlife in their surrounding area, it supports producers who raise and sell their crops there. Patricia E. Salkin states, “Urban bees provide important pollination services to community gardens, home vegetable gardens, and fruit trees.” Not only will it help neighbors’ goods and plants, but it will help others’ gardens and plants as well.
However, the roles that each bee fills are marginally more complicated compared to ants. There are three different types of bees in a colony queens, drones, and workers. Honey bee queens, similar to ant queens, primarily breed, but they also produce “pheromones that serve as a social ‘glue’ unifying and helping to give individual identity to a bee colony” (Mid Atlantic Apiculture Research & Extension Consortium). Drones are the male bees of the hive and only present during the warmer periods of the year, because they starve during the winter after being kicked out of colonies with a queen. Their one commitment is to fertilize virgin queens.
