He also started the first Union Fire company in Philadelphia, which is basically a fire department.
Though he was into fire and zapping things, he also had an aquatic invention, The Franklin Swim Fin. This fin was a wood plank in the shape of a fin designed for increased swimming ability. Though these paddles were very awkward to use, modern day swim fins are definitely better, leaving the Franklin fin treading water. A really fun invention he engineered was the long arm reacher. Benjamin Franklin invented this long arm reacher because he was getting old and couldn’t climb up ladders without great effort to reach his books. His first solution to this was to get his nephews to grab them for him. However, this was hard on his nephews to be there constantly to get him books so, Franklin being an inventor like he is, decided to create a contraption to help him reach all the books. The final product was a long pole with three prongs at one end with string running through the pole to a trigger, if you were to pull this trigger, it would use the string to pull the prongs
