Gender roles are a socially constructed concept created by men that have punished women for centuries. However, as society progresses further along people have begun to break free from confining gender roles. Most protests are apparent in literary works that demonstrate gender inequality. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the readers follow Nick Carraway as he shares the story of Jay Gatsby, and his pursuit for wealth and Daisy Buchanan. In comparison, Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome focuses on Ethan Frome, a poor farmer, and his life in Starkfield, MA.
Gilman incorporates the literary techniques of tone and diction to provide the reader with a clear understanding of how the narrator falls into the beliefs of society, while she is confined and oppressed by her husband’s diagnosis of her being “Nervously Depressed”. Looking in from the outside, the journey of Women’s rights was a lengthy one, and it has come a significant way from what it began as. It was a long road to freedom that started with just a few women protesting together for change in the mid 1800’s to the large movement it is today. What started only as an effort to put women on equal footing with men in the voting realm blossomed into a full on fight against gender norms and independence through protesting, speeches, and gatherings. Gender norms or ‘roles’ are (as defined by Webster’s dictionary) “a set of societal norms dictating what types of behaviors are generally considered acceptable, appropriate, or desirable for a person based on their actual or perceived sex” and they are one thing that modern feminist have set their sights on to change for the better. Traditional gender roles have continued to exist for hundreds of years through perpetrators such as religion, government and society, and its effects have been felt by every woman, whether they realize it or not.
Gender Roles in the Play “Fences” Gender roles are different behaviors that are considered acceptable among both sexes. These roles determine the way in which a man and woman should behave at home and in public. Gender roles may vary depending on the culture and society one lives in, and based on the beliefs and experiences that a person may possess. If a person were to describe these roles his or her response would vary depending on the time period that this person would live in due to the changes that occur over time (Gender Roles).
Historical events in America have determined that gender roles are not something "God-Given" or natural- gender roles are more of a social structure created by society. However, these historical events lead to society deeming roles necessary to keep certain groups in check. The 1920s was a significant time due to social change and the aftermath of World War II. It was a time when women began protesting and fighting for equality in a society filled with inequality. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald highlights the problematic stereotypical roles given to genders in American society.
The narrator has difficulties realizing that she has been given a role and that is what she is supposed to follow, even though she wants to do the total opposite. The girl has always been told to work inside during the hot summers, clean and to be more ladylike. Many people in today's culture are oppressed by their expectations and see a lot more people being challenged by society and going against the normal flow. In today’s society, the phrase “gender role” was different now than years ago. Today’s society, have a new meaning when it comes to the phrase “gender role”. However, years ago, the phrase had a special meaning to it. Gender role was a phrase that defines you, as a man and woman, and what type of job you pertain in the household.
Gender roles are defined as “the role or behavior learned by a person as appropriate to their gender, determined by the prevailing cultural norms,” (Oxford Dictionary). Over time, gender roles have drastically changed in the United States and many other places. In recent history, men and women had completely different expectations and standards to which they were held. Men were considered to be superior to women in many ways. During this time a patriarchal lifestyle was common.
Nevertheless she shows us also a way to surmount this oppression. In this facet the narrator speaks about two professional men, her husband and her brother, describing them as high standing doctors; in opposition to this man prototype, she speaks about two women without profession except of housewives or housekeeper. In “The Yellow Wallpaper” we see the role of women limited by a patriarchal society that does not allow them to advance or progress. This is seen in the following excerpts, when the narrator describes her sister-in-law, “She is a perfect and enthusiastic housekeeper, and hopes for no better profession.” (Gilman 217).
Gender roles are present everywhere and are more and more prevalent the further back you go. They define relationships and heavily influence people's actions. Gender roles can hurt those that are trapped in them because they are not allowed the freedom of living like they want. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, one key relationship in the story is wrecked by gender roles.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman was not just an author but a great feminist. Gillam inspired countless women to seek indecency with her work like "The Yellow Wallpaper. " The story is a fictionalized short story of a woman who is descending into madness while dealing with her mental illness and cannot heal due to her husband 's lack of belief. At the same time, the woman also known as the narrator feels imprisoned in her marriage. The story takes place during a time were women and had no independence and were not able to voice their own opinion.
