Buehler, J. W. (2017). Racial/ethnic disparities in the use of lethal force by US police, 2010-2014. American Journal of Public Health, 107 (2), 295-297. In Buehler’s article, he attempts to disprove a study that found no racial disparities in killings that law enforcement were responsible for.
People have accused officers of shooting arbitrarily, or unjustifiably, and most frequently of exhibiting racism in such situations. These accusations have been supported by numerous empirical studies showing that police officers kill African-Americans at a disproportionately higher rate than whites (Tennenbaum,
Hard Data, Hollow Protests I highly disagree with majority of Mac Donald’s argument. Firstly, her inclination that officers “have more to fear from black men than black men have to fear” from the officers does not sit well with me. Although blacks may make up the highest percentage of cop-killers, blacks are more likely to be shot than whites. I suggest that since both facts are true to an extent, social culture and biases have become the driving force for both instances to play out as they are: Black men are more likely to kill cops, cops are more likely to kill black men.
At least 303 lives of African Americans were lost due to police shootings in 2016. Why is this number so high and why is it growing? Many people believe the brutality of police and authorities has grown stronger in the past several years towards those of color, and that it is becoming incorrigible. Back in 2012, the life of Trayvon Martin was lost suddenly due to a watch captain of the neighborhood, George Zimmerman. Zimmerman had claimed to see a “suspicious person” and was directed to stay in his SUV, however those orders were not followed.
Black people are being targeted by white police because blacks appear to be frightening thus causing innocent black lives casualties. Racial issues cause racial tensions that lead to doing injustice and suffering from it. Clearly shooting an unarmed black male was not the best decision however the decision of shooting an innocent unarmed black person will haunt them for the rest of their life. Justice and order needs to be considered at times
However, research demonstrates that often times men of color are treated harshly which leads to negative perceptions of police officers. Police brutality is a crime that is has been surfacing in the news recently. Some people are just starting to realize that these injustices against the black community really occur, while others are well aware. The recent shootings, different run-ins with officers being filmed while doing such harmful actions against African American men is an example of police brutality and, that reminds us that as a society work needs to be done to improve police and community relations. A black male cannot even walk down the street on a cold night because he might be a suspect from something or he may be of danger to the people around.
Between 1999-2016 there were more white victims than black killed by law enforcement , however, blacks only make up 12% of the population. Breaking it down, this shows that blacks are at a 3.5 times greater risk of being one of the 776 killed by police shootings. Are blacks becoming the victims of these shootings? What might have caused these statistics? Recent studies show minimal to no consequences for misconduct
This year alone there has been thirty -two police shootings. Including “Harris County Deputy Darren H. Goforth, 47, he was in uniform at a Chevron gas station when the killer approached him from behind and shot him multiple times.” ( heavy.com) It is said that he was shot by an African American male. The continuous violence against all people needs to stop. This is not going to help the situation, it is only going to make matters
This is not a racial issue, this is a social problem. By July of 2015, the number of police- related deaths extended to 664 making the country’s police force one of the deadliest in the USA. Out of the total of 644 deaths, 321 were Caucasian fatalities, 174 were African Americans, and 96 were Hispanics. According to the reports, 578 of these deaths were involved guns, others involved car
Officers have been killed by the men and women they swear to protect just because of the stereotype that police kill African Americans for no reason. These are mostly good hearted citizens who want to keep innocent people safe from harm. Just like the Salem witch trials where people were accused of being a witch solely because they would commit suspicious acts like “reading books” (Miller 498), these good people are killed solely based on the false stereotypes that people believe. In over 300 years, human beings have not changed and have let fear override their
You’ve heard many officers say "whatever I need to do to get home safe." The problem with this is, they see the people they’re supposed to protect as a threat to them. Also, their instructions on policies for the use of force is confusing and most training scenarios end in force; rarely being trained on how to solve problems peacefully. The most important finding was that 80% of the shooting victims were black since they were more prone to to be seen as a threat. Racial profiling is the reason why black people are targeted more.
As a result, there is a drastic increase of violent outburst between both sides. For the last years, it was reported that 51.5 percent of black were killed by police officers (ibtimes.com). On the other hand, there have been 51,548 assaults against law enforcement and it resulted in 14,453 injuries in 2015 alone (nleomf.org). In the United States, recently, police brutality has been a popular subject all over the news and social media.
Racism is a problem in our society, there has been shootings, protesting and disrespect for our country’s past, present and future. Black lives matter! Racism is no good and bad for our country. Too many African Americans have been shot and killed by white police officers. An off duty black police officer was shot by a white officer on June 21, 2017.
Cops around the United States have been accused of racially profiling black people. This topic has been brought up by everyone around the U.S. and is very controversial. Studies have shown that the majority of deaths by police officers have been people of opposite color in America. Police brutality in America is a growing epidemic that has shown no signs of slowing down. Innocent men, women, and even children have been killed by police officers for no reason.
An occurrence observed by the population of Los Angeles, California conveys the existence of racism and police brutality. According to The Polls-Trends: Racial Differences in Attitudes Toward the Police, “…three quarters of blacks, but only 38 percent of whites, continued to view police brutality as a common occurrence” (Tuch and Weitzer
