Chapters three through five specifically cover the enemy’s during the The War of 1898. Miller emphasizes throughout these chapters the
American journalists reported what was happening and Americans became enraged at Spain. The Yellow Press exaggerated what was happening in Cuba, which made Americans more man than they probably should have bee. Spain decided to give limited sovereignty to Cuba, but the USA did not agree with this; the USA said Spain should fully withdraw from Cuba. President William McKinley did not want to go to war, but a large portion of America wanted to help the Cubans. On April 24, 1898, Spain declared war on the United States of America.
America’s entrance in the Spanish-American War was primarily due to the random explosion of the USS Maine on February 15, 1898, which killed 267 service men aboard. This attack leads to Congress’s vote to go to war against Spain. The United States’ desire to expand military overseas also played a part in the American entrance to this war. Economically speaking, the U.S. wanted Cuban crops to come to America, and not only Spain. “The war enabled the United States to establish its predominance in the Caribbean region and to pursue its strategic and economic interests in Asia” (“Spanish-American War”).
During the 1890s, journalism that sensationalized Cuban affairs became a powerful force that helped fuel anti-Spanish and pro-war feelings in the United States (“Yellow Journalism”). This type of journalism, called yellow journalism, relied on exaggerating stories in order to lure readers and increase newspaper sales (“Yellow Journalism”). Led by New York World owner Joseph Pulitzer and New York Journal owner William Randolph Hearst, yellow journalism played a significant role in pushing the United States’ decision to declare war on Spain in 1898 (“U.S. Diplomacy”). Prior to the Spanish-American War, Cuba’s struggle for independence was met with American sympathy, as General Valeriano Weyler tried to crush the revolution launched by José
Mexican War, the misinterpreted situation, full of thievery of land and of lives. In 1846 the U.S went to war with Mexico, most people know it this way, but they did not know the actions that led to it. The U.S was not justified in going to war with Mexico. Some people think otherwise, but the facts are in the documents. These is what I think are the best 3 reasons, the land hunger of the U.S, the transgression of Mexican rules, and the amount of casualties left by the acts of the U.S.
During the 19th century, the people of the United States of America had a belief that they had a justifiable right to expand its territory; otherwise known as manifest destiny. This belief of inevitable conquering land in North America led to conflicts with the indigenous people already occupying the land. One of the conflicts the Americans had with the indigenous people of North America was the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) in which Mexico fought for their territory that the Americans thought was rightfully theirs in the attempt to expand west. There may be several reasons to the cause of the Mexican-American war, however, the two major causes of the war were consequences resulting from the Texas War of Independence and the American’s desire
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the U.S. was rapidly changing, in more ways than one. The Civil War had ended in 1865 with a victory for the North. The zipper was developed in the United States in 1891. In 1893 women are granted the right to vote in Colorado, and the U.S economy is benefitting from the sale of agriculture to europe. In 1896 the Supreme Court decided that “separate but equal” public facilities are legal.
the United States used propaganda targeting humanitarian concerns to incite the public to declare war. As Americans were interested in the Cuban Revolution, sensational journalism only raised tensions between the United States and the Spanish monarchy, which would help cause the war. Although President McKinley didn’t want to start a war, “yellow journalism” had rallied the furious American citizens and pressured McKinley to issue a declaration of war. A war came after President McKinley gave into the pressure coming from the American public. After America won the war, the Platt Amendment replaced the joint resolution, giving America the power to override Cuba’s
Many important events preluded the Civil War, but the Mexican-American War essentially caused the war to happen. Although there are many other theories on what events caused the Civil War, such as the Scott vs. Sandford court case and Abraham Lincoln’s election as president, the Mexican-American War was the most imperative for the Civil War to occur. Without the occurrence of the Mexican-American War, a crucial chain of events that would lead to the Civil War, such as the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act, would not have happened or could have happened differently, and the Civil War could have been prevented. The Causes of the Civil War
The causes of the Mexican-American war were the Annexation of Texas, Land Disputes between Mexico and the United States of America and President Polk’s Greed. The country of Mexico was upset and angry with the United States of America because they took the state of Texas away from them. The two continued to dispute over Southern Texas and the land between the rivers Rio Grande and Nueces. President Polk later sent a messenger to offer thirty-million dollars for the SouthWest. Mexico declined the offer and President Polk declared war on Mexico.

The Mexican-American War took place a little while after Texas gained its independence in 1836. Firstly, The US did not want Texas apart of the Union because they wanted less slave states not more. The Mexican government started stating that they would do border raids and that if any invasion, and or takeover were to try to happen this would cause a war. Still in the 1844 election of United States President James K. Polk did not care he truly believed in “ manifest destiny ” which was another of say he believed that it was the “US destiny to spread across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. ”Believing in this President Polk tried to purchase what is now the U.S southwest.
Another one of the biggest and most significant causes of the Mexican-American War was the annexation of Texas. Mexico became an independent republic in 1821. At this time, Texas was one of 19 Mexican states and had a sparse population. To encourage additional settlement, just before independence the Spanish commandant general in Monterrey gave an American family, the Austins, permission to move about 300 American Catholic families to Texas (Mexican American War (Causes)). Stephen Austin received permission from Mexican authorities to bring into Texas as many as 300 families each year as long as they professed to be Catholics, learned spanish and agreed to live by Mexican law.
This explosion finally made the Americans want to go to war, and so the United States decided to get involved. On April 25, 1898, the United States officially went to war with Spain to help Cuba. Instead of the battles being fast and right away, the United States was hesitant and patient. After multiple articles from Hearst and Pulitzer exposing the horrors in Cuba and the rumors about the explosion of the U.S. Mains, America finally got involved in the Spanish American
