World War II World War II was a brutal, bloody, and horrific modern war. It featured the Allies, chiefly composed of The Soviet Union, The United States, The United Kingdom, China, and France, against the Axis Powers of Germany, Japan, and Italy. This second great war devastates people, families, and countries beyond what could have ever been imagined.
The conflicts of World War II arose from the unresolved tension left over from the end of World War I. The world was in a state of instability. Adolf Hitler used this instability to rise in power and quickly rearmed (“World War II History”). Germany’s growing military and threats to Poland led Britain’s Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, to create an alliance with Poland promising to protect it. (Hart 3). However, Hitler saw this as a sign of hostility and created his own alliances with Japan and Italy (“World War II History”). This included the Germany-Japan Nonaggression Pact (National Geographic Society). Five months later, Germany invades Poland. Britain and France both had alliances with Poland so they declared war on Germany. They also did this for another reason. They could see the growing danger of Germany and wanted to keep their own nations safe. Many historians like Liddel Hart call this their “ultimate motive“(3). It is also known as The Blitz or the London Blitz. This battle is a great example of perseverance, as many major cities in Britain were brutally bombed nightly for months (Trueman, C N). Britain used RADAR to detect these bombers and other enemy aircraft (Trueman, C N).
