The Election of 1912: Nominees and Political Party Platforms The election of 1912, held on November 5th of 1912, was an important presidential election in American history that witnessed a rare race between four candidates. The four political parties in the race were Democratic, Republican, Progressive, and Socialist. The Democratic nominee was Woodrow Wilson. The Republican nominee was former president William Howard Taft. The Progressive nominee was former president Theodore Roosevelt. The Socialist nominee was Eugene V. Debs. The ultimate winner of this election was the Democratic candidate, making Woodrow Wilson the 28th President of the United States of America. I think the most important goals of this platform were tax reforms, unemployment reforms, the establishment of “collective ownership”, and the direct election of the President and Vice-President. Like a few of the other parties, the Socialists wanted an income and an inheritance tax. This was the only party platform that I saw mention unemployment. The Socialist Party promised to give government assistance to people who were “unemployment by the extension of all useful public works.” As far as monopolies are concerned, the Socialist believed in the abolishment of monopolies owning patents. Instead, they wanted them to be “collectively owned” and give benefits to the inventors. Lastly, this party called for the direct election of the President and Vice-President. When Roosevelt let the presidential office in 1909, he picked William Howard Taft as the next president and helped to get him elected. Taft promised to run the country as Roosevelt had. When we got into office, though, he made several changes Roosevelt did not like. So in 1912, Roosevelt decided to run for another term against Taft. The Republican Party was split between the two. Eventually, Roosevelt abandoned the Republican Party and with the help of his supporters, created the Progressive Party. Roosevelt became their nominee and he made the statement that he felt “as strong as a Bull Moose.” This led to the Progressive Party’s common name of the Bull Moose Party. After all the obstacles and drama Roosevelt faced to even become a candidate for the presidency, I genuinely believe he wanted the best for our country and would have done anything as president to achieve
