The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a play which takes place in the Puritan New England in the town Salem,Massachusetts. The year is 1692 and the town of Salem is set in a theocratic society where the church and state are one and coincide. The religion of Salem at the time is a Protestant form of Christianity known as Puritanism, where morals and state laws go hand in hand. The ethics of one’s self and whether or not sin occurs is a state/public issue. This extreme devotion to God and being almost perfect in morals causes little deviation from social norms without question of faith or superstition of witchcraft/devil work.
