From studying education, I have noticed how many school districts teach based upon what the students will be tested over. As a future educator, I feel as if a standardized test cannot determine what a student is capable of. The individuals creating the test often don’t realize that many students suffer from test anxiety, in fear of failing the test and what is more fearful is how the school districts pressure the teachers to stress to the students the importance of passing the test. Also, in this chapter Boaler describes assessment for learning as having three components clear communication about what students have learned, a way to help students understand where they are on their journey to mastery and where they still need to improve, and information on ways to get from where students are currently to where they need to be to meet success criteria. This chapter offered several strategies that will help students have a better grasp of where they are in the learning process and that will help them develop and maintain a growth mindset.
Proponents see standardized testing as a way of making testing more efficient and effective by minimizing cost and increasing people’s accountability for their performance in the system. Opponents on the other hand argue that the systems has limitations based on its very nature on what can be tested and as a result of these standards needing to be met sacrifice some very important aspects of students education experience as well as force onto students and teachers a one size fits all model that has failed to deliver on its promises. In this analysis by author Ashley Ross, readers are given a different point of view. Ross focused on the teachers and what they can do to help comfort and support their students who have a sense of anxiety before or during tests. She gave a detailed explanation of signs and symptoms to look for when trying to identify test anxiety, along with specific ways to treat it. She also included person statements and answers from a variety of teachers and professors. Despite explaining the causes and effects of test anxiety with regards to teaching, Ross wanted to get a different point of view.
Standardized testing not only stresses out students, but it also leads the teachers to go in a dilemma whether to focus on the curriculum or to get students ready for the standardized testing. No one has ever enjoyed taking a test in his or her entire educational history. Similarly Mr. Estrada’s 4th grade class was not every excited about taking standardized test. Each student has his or her own level of learning. As the students were taking the test, I noticed some students were panicking, while others were confused.
Many students are smart and understand the content, but it doesn't show on test scores (Gregory J. Cizek, 2001). In essence, testing brings out stress in even the brightest of students, messing with their heads come test day. The facts show that from the 50 states, 700 school districts claim that standardardized tests are causing greater anxiety than the average everyday assessments (Joseph Spector, 2015). All students feel stress when something meaningful is tied to them, especially something important, such as tests. The amounts of pressure put on students can cause them to perform poorly, which leads to consequences toward the teacher and even the school. Once stress is put on the students, it can cause them to think negatively of school and learning in the future. Many teachers eventually quit their professions due to the amount of stress put on them to prepare their students for standardized tests. The job of the teacher relies on the students, and if the students don’t perform well, the teacher could lose their job.
The list goes on and on. These tests generate infinite measures of anxiety and negative aspects. Test anxiety develops because of the pressure students feel to prepare for their future. The tests should benefit both the teach and the student. More importantly community service and leadership skills should become incorporated into a students school day.
